Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear says he'll 'take a look' at running for president

Gov. Andy Beshear, D-Ky., would not rule out running for president in 2028, telling Meet the Press moderator Kristen Welker that he may take a look at launching a bid. I would have never considered this a couple years ago, but I will not leave a broken country to my kids or to anyone elses, Beshear said Sunday. And so if Im somebody that at that point, that I believe that I can heal the country, then Ill take a look at it.
Beshear, who was first elected governor in 2019, won re-election in 2023, becoming a rare Democrat to govern a ruby-red state, where 64.5% of voters cast ballots for President Donald Trump in 2024.
Asked whether he was running for president, Beshear said, What Im doing right now is trying to be a reasonable voice out there that hopefully doesnt just bring Democrats back together, but Democrats, Republicans and independents.
This country has gotten far too partisan, too much us versus them. If we can focus on the core issues that lift up every single American, then we can actually move not right or left, but forward as a country, Beshear added.

(642 posts)Have an easier time winning. It actually works the same for republicans from a blue state.

(25,951 posts)And he's been GREAT for Kentucky. I get emails every day from his office talking about some new company that's moving to KY, and how many jobs its going to bring. Bevin (who everybody hated, both sides,) had huge deficits, and left office that way. Gov Beshear has consistent budget surpluses. Last one I saw was over $1B.
People like him. He's the most popular Dem governor in the country. I have seen clips of him being righteously fired up. He's personable, compassionate, and not bad looking.
He can do this.

One of the things I loved best was his willingness to own his decisions, admit when theyre not going to be popular (and more importantly , when he got something wrong) but stand by their necessity.
Sometimes I feel like hes not wholly comfortable in the national interviews and worry about how consultants may try to fix that. You can see the transition from speaking from the heart to the rote talking points.
Overall Im a huge fan and even have a Yall Cant Be Doing That mask 😂

I'd personally vote for a rabid marmot before a Republican so whomever comes out on top has my vote.

(4,679 posts)I have been paying close attention to what Beshear has been doing as Governor, and Kentucky has been very lucky to have him. I'd certainly trade OUR governor for him.
I hope he does run for President!

Kentucky ranks 34th in Education, 46th on quality of life issues. Those are issues that should appeal to a broad base of voters, but there is no upward movement on these issues within the state, so his appeals for bipartisan work on these issues are falling on deaf ears.

They even overrode him on requiring masking for public places during Covid. We had signs on the doors of retail stores for about 2 months before they repealed it.
I grew up in KY, left for a while but back now for 10 years. Andy has been wonderful for our state but running for President is not the answer. He can't win. He needs to run for Mitch's senate seat. And, I think he would prevail.
