An official says a historic Grand Canyon lodge has been destroyed by wildfire
Source: NBC News
A historic lodge on the Grand Canyon's North Rim has been destroyed by a fast-moving wildfire, the park said Sunday.
The Grand Canyon Lodge, the only lodging inside the park at the North Rim, was consumed by the flames, park Superintendent Ed Keable told park residents, staff and others in a meeting Sunday morning. He said the visitor center, the gas station, a waste water treatment plant, an administrative building and some employee housing were among the 50 to 80 structures lost.
Two wildfires are burning at or near the North Rim, known as the White Sage Fire and the Dragon Bravo Fire. The latter is the one that impacted the lodge and other structures. The park initially was managing it as a controlled burn but then shifted to suppression as it rapidly grew to 7.8 square miles (20 square kilometers) because of hot temperatures, low humidity and wind, fire officials said.
The White Sage Fire doubled in size on Sunday, growing from roughly 20,000 acres to 40,000, according to government website that tracks U.S. fires.

(56,151 posts)In hindsight, I guess they should have tried to immediately put it out rather than let it burn. I don't know if that was standard operating procedure.

They shifted to aggressive suppression a week later as it rapidly grew to 7.8 square miles because of hot temperatures, low humidity and strong wind gusts, fire officials said.

Too bad they didn't try to put it out when it was first spotted.

(25,540 posts)And sadly it will never get rebuilt under this administration because they hate public parks and hell probably sell it off to the highest bidder who gives him a cut on the side deposited into his hidden offshore account.

(9,952 posts)...sad that we assume such things of our "president."
The wife and I stayed at the North Rim Lodge about 30 years ago. Simply magnificent. It's emblematic of what's happening in the country. Disasters coming hot and heavy.

(56,325 posts)Is there a fire map? I know a family that owns a hotel campground on the area. They had a close fire a few years ago and were pretty pissed off at the Forest Service about it then. Another "contolled" burn. Oh shit

(33,820 posts)It was Jacob Lake Inn and that White Sage Fire is closer than the other that burned th GC lodge. Too close, really. I saw on their website they were under evacuation orders.

(587 posts)which is pretty stupid given it's July. I doubt this had anything to do with the park service cuts, it sounds more like just a dumb decision.

(22,337 posts)"Only" went to the South Rim...which is where I wanted to go. This was part of my across the USA trip in '79.
While I did a good mix of planning, and spur-of-the-moment decisions; the one I didn't think through enough was The Grand Canyon. Didn't occur that the South Lodge, hotel etc would be filled up. Duh!
It also seemed that many rooms were booked from a Phienix to GC run; wherein I was coming from Flagstaff.
.
I took a bus that was a Noonish to 4PM visit. It was partly disappointing at first. BUT...how could that be, it's the GC?!!
Well, at noon; besides the rocks next level down looking a faded red- when you looked out across the whole canyon - it was all blues, from very pale to medium dark, along with darkish red-purples. Hardly any shadows.
Where were the glorious warm colors we all know ?!
It was very flat looking: like a diorama! Didn't look real, at all.Very weird.
But finally around 3PM the sun got to the right angle to bring out the pale yellows, ocher, golden ochers, oranges, red oranges we all know, and love from photos.
*Glorious*!
.
Hopefully, we get our country back, and a Dem administration will rebuilt if this damn republican Congress doesn't!!

(981 posts)Its bad. Really bad. Almost every North Rim building is either badly damaged or burned down. Inner Canyon is closed.
Im what would be termed a second responder. Infrastructure work. Were hearing at least two weeks before we can check it out.
This is one of my Favorite Places in the World. More than a little heartbroken.
