Texas Republican admits: Trump's tariffs will 'hurt' district but 'I support him'

A Texas congressman laid out the often lonely task of defending Donald Trumps tariff plan to Americans on Sunday as he admitted to CNN that the measures would hurt his district but he supported them anyway.
Tony Gonzales was on CNNs State of the Union on Sunday when he gave the matter-of-fact assessment. His state and district battled powerful flooding over the Fourth of July weekend that left more than 100 dead and dozens missing at a girls summer camp and an RV/mobile home park.
Gonzales was asked by CNNs Dana Bash whether the announced reciprocal tariff rate for Mexico of 30 percent was too high. The congressman was also queried whether his district would be hurt by the tariffs.
It may, responded Gonzales. But I do support the president in this.

At the very least pick a cage at alcatraz n lock the gate behind you. You f.cking traitor to your race. You stand by and watch our people getting abused because of the color of their skin. You're lower than the crap stuck to the bottom of the Felon's shoes.
You're going to stick by that big bullsh.t bill and call yourself a conservative fiscally responsible Republican. I don't think you guys are fooling anybody anymore. Take your 30% and shove it where the sun don't shine.

(326 posts)...any day now. This is all going to wok out great for Tony and the people of his district.
When the rest of the world imposes tariffs on stupidity and despair then America is going to be in real trouble since those seem to be our primary exports now....

(12,680 posts)Headlines often somewhat mischaracterize things, just due to the nature of being as short as they are. But Gonzales literally said the tariffs MAY hurt his constituents, and the headline writer changed it to WILL. They valued a more sensationalist biased headline over a more accurate one that would have been just as brief. Irritating.

(156,458 posts)then the question that came up in the OP was the last one (at ~the 4:57 minute mark) and at the end of his remarks, he says "Yes if these tariffs come into place, it hurts everyone" (with no equivocation).

(12,680 posts)The author should have included that info in their article, if that would have justified the headline.
(I can't watch the video personally, though. For some reason, videos on the CNN site are not playing for me!)

(156,458 posts)but they might have it up later since this was just aired yesterday.
Most of the article was discussing the Mexico (and Brazil) tariffs, including remarks by Mexico's President, 45, and WH Economic Council Director Hassett, with a few other quotes from Gonzales mixed in. It appears the angle was to note that TX obviously hosts trade routes between the U.S. & Mexico (thus having Gonzales add comments since he is a Rep. there), knowing that the state voted for 45.
The line I quoted was the very last sentence before the CNN segment ended.

In normal times admitting that would be political suicide.
