More than four dozen firefighters responded to the Gabriel House assisted living facility just before 10 p.m. Sunday. The Fall River Fire Department said there are multiple injuries and fatalities. WLNE
Multiple people died Sunday night at an assisted living facility that caught fire in Fall River, Massachusetts, officials said, with elderly people begging for help.
Crews were met with heavy fire coming through the main entrance and multiple people hanging out the windows, looking to be rescued, Fall River Fire Chief Jeffrey Bacon told reporters outside the Gabriel House facility.
Unfortunately, at this time, we do have fatalities and multiple injuries.
Officials did not immediately have details on the injuries to residents, but Bacon said five firefighters were taken from the scene with mostly minor injuries.
A lot of these people needed assistance just getting out of the building, and a five-star effort got as many people out as we could, Fall River Mayor Paul Coogan said.
This is a developing story and will be updated.

(105,632 posts)This is what happens when we DO NOT REGULATE anything in this country. Letting industry run rampant with no rules or regulations and all the money going to the shitty owners is what led to this. We have to change this, cause it ain't working.
Awarding millions of dollars to the victims and families after lawsuits have been filed is not justice.

(21,204 posts)a nursing home fire in Marietta, Ohio killed 21 people. Ohio changed the laws regarding nursing home safety.
I hope there are more survivors than fatalities in Massachusetts.

(25,951 posts)Trapped in a burning building. Getting to this stage of their lives, and then being taken out like this. I can't imagine the terror, especially of the disabled.

(12,407 posts)I have questioned repeatedly WHY these facilities are allowed to be multi-story as this one was; it appears to be a three-story building. Many elderly and disabled residents can't get out of these in the event of a catastrophe, or even something as simple(?) as a power outage. For instance, I saw a report some time back of a prolonged power outage in a HIGH-RISE facility for the elderly which literally had many people trapped in their apartments because the elevators weren't working and many who were somewhat disabled, i.e. using canes or walkers for safety, could not get down the stairs safely. What if there had been a fire? Or if it had been midsummer and hot has hell, or midwinter and colder than dammit? Fortunately in that case it wasn't, but it could have been.
My condolences to the families of all who died. Memory eternal.
