While I have not yet had a chance to read it, I was aware this study was underway, have read some of the authors' prior studies and believe they are cautious researchers.

but everyone always says I'm hyperbolic. I'm also very concerned about all the chemicals spewed out into the air we breathe as catalysts for many illnesses, such as some autoimmune diseases. But that would hit the R's biggest donors, so that is never truly investigated, and when such studies are done - well, the results rarely ever make it to press.

It's sad that energy had to be wasted doing this study when it's been quite apparent based on decades of research that there was never any link to autism. Meanwhile, these folks probably drive around with their windows down when air pollution IS linked to a whole host of health conditions.

A new study demonstrates that aluminum is co-located with phosphorylated tau protein, present as tangles within neurons in the brains of early-onset or familial Alzheimer’s disease (AD).

“The presence of these tangles is associated with neuronal cell death, and observations of aluminum in these tangles may highlight a role for aluminum in their formation,” explained lead investigator Matthew John Mold, PhD, Birchall Centre, Lennard-Jones Laboratories, Keele University, Staffordshire, UK.

The presence of Al in these tangled proteins may simply reflect the chemical properties of these proteins, one of those being that they bond more strongly to Al than other tissues do. Thus accumulation of Al may well be an indicator that these proteins are present, but not at all necessarily a cause -- just as certain types of tissues bind strongly to certain dyes, facilitating their detection by microscopy.


Aluminum is the third most abundant element in the Earth's crust, more common than iron, calcium, sodium, potassium, or magnesium. It is present in all natural water, but usually at very low concentration, unless the pH reaches extreme values -- either high acidity or alkalinity increases the solubility of Al. It seems unlikely that any organism on Earth could have survived the pressures of natural selection if it was vulnerable to traces of something so ubiquitous.
