July 15 (Reuters) - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said on Tuesday it will now review all imports of the products it regulates regardless of their quantity or value, after a federal law enforcement agency recently rescinded an exemption for small shipments. Under the updated regulations, exemptions that previously allowed import of some product shipments valued at $800 or less without a full screening by the FDA will be revoked, it said in an industry notice.
The health regulator expects the new regulations, which kicked in from July 9, will improve its oversight of the U.S. supply chain and help identify any repeat offenders. These changes will allow the FDA to review all electronically transmitted products, such as those ordered online and offered for import.
The new rules will apply to all FDA-regulated products, including medicines, food, beverages, dietary supplements, cosmetics, medical devices and biological samples.
Smaller parcels will have to comply with the same standards as bulky shipments, the notice said.
This could increase the agency's oversight of the so-called "gray market" for obesity medicines. Americans have been bringing in cheap active ingredients from China "for research purposes", according to a Reuters report from June that cited import data and social media postings.

Or... 2023 Cantaloupe Salmonella Outbreak: This was a significant outbreak linked to contaminated cantaloupe that resulted in illnesses across multiple states and a recall of the fruit. The investigation involved both the FDA and CDC.
Or... 2020 Peach Salmonella Outbreak: A Salmonella Enteriditis outbreak was linked to peaches from a specific grower and resulted in recalls across the US and in other countries.
And... Onions (Multiple Years): Onions have been the source of several large Salmonella outbreaks and recalls, including in 2020 and 2021.
Along with... 2024 E. coli O121:H19 Outbreak Linked to Organic Carrots: The CDC and FDA investigated an E. coli outbreak traced to organic carrots, prompting recalls by Grimmway Farms and others.
And don't forget... Lead Contamination in Applesauce (2023): This led to recalls of cinnamon applesauce pouches from various brands and resulted in illnesses, primarily affecting children.
Things will get much worse before it gets better.

(397 posts)So whos going to do all this extra work? I mean- I remember Dubya decimating the FDA. I dont think it ever really recovered from that. Then came DOGE cutting everything under the sun to the bone and beyond. So really, how will they staff this? What a joke. A sick joke.

(5,069 posts)1) Make a sensible decision to let the FDA do its job of protecting the public.
2) Fire half the agency.
3) When the agency fails in this job, point to it and say, "See, government doesn't work."
4) Privatize the job, handing a huge lucrative contract to a corporation who will do an even worse job.
5) Profit.
