Netanyahu's Party Accuses Biden Administration of Attempted Coup in Israel After GOP Releases NGO Report

Prime Minister Netanyahu's Likud party Friday slammed former U.S. President Joe Biden's administration for allegedly transferring over a billion dollars to leftist groups in Israel protesting his government's attempts to overhaul the country's judiciary, less than 24 hours after House Republicans issued a report asserting misappropriation of American aid funds to Israeli NGOs.

Netanyahu's accusations of an organized attempt to overthrow his government are the latest instance of the prime minister directly amplifying Israel's increased politicization among U.S. political parties, as well as the GOP's attempts at justifying their attacks on previously sacrosanct foreign aid for democratic allies.

Over the past several months, House Republicans have targeted six Israeli NGOs – Jewish Communal Fund, Middle East Peace Dialogue Network, Movement for Quality Government, PEF Israel Endowment Funds, Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors, Blue and White Future – over their role in the protests that arose in Spring 2023 against Netanyahu's efforts to compromise Israeli democracy.

Rep. Jim Jordan, who chairs the committee that authored Thursday's report, and House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Brian Mast have jointly accused the groups of "attempting to undermine Israel's democratically elected government," describing it as a potentially criminal attack on civil liberties. The groups in question categorically denied receiving any federal funding.

"One can't believe their own eyes – a massive foreign intervention in an attempt to replace a right-wing government in Israel," the Likud party's statement read.
