House Oversight Chair James Comer has subpoenaed Jeffrey Epsteins former associate Ghislaine Maxwell for a deposition. The committee said in a release that the deposition will take place at the Federal Correctional Institution in Tallahassee, Florida, on August 11.
The Department of Justice is cooperating and will help facilitate the deposition at the prison, a statement from the committee said.
Comer, a Kentucky Republican, told CNNs Manu Raju on Tuesday that it was an open question whether his panel would begin a full-blown probe into the Epstein scandal, saying: Well see what she has to say. But he said that Republicans wanted more information released by the Justice Department regardless of where his panels inquiry goes.
The issuing of the subpoena comes as many congressional Republicans have called for more transparency over the Epstein case.

(157,375 posts)And actually - this looks to be a deposition and it will probably be carried out by the staff and the Congressional lawyers behind closed doors and won't really require members to be there.

(37,029 posts)Members sometimes declare themselves to be "plenipotentiary committees of one" and throw their non-existent weight around, but unless functioning with the authorization of the committee, they're acting as private citizens. But they manage to have power when they vote and so we act like they aren't usurping power.
It's less egregiously awkward when they're part of the majority of a committee, because solidarity will say the committee with have the person's back. But the actual rules governing the committee ... They're only useful when they can be used for a "good" reason. However that's defined.

(41,183 posts)And yet the House just went into recess. If the House hadn't recessed, I wouldn't have questioned Comer's subpoena, but they have recessed, and so even with official stationery and Comer's signature here, something doesn't seem right about this.
I could speculate that this committee's going after information from Maxwell that contradicts the "deal" she might make with Blanche and Bondi, but then I'd be giving rethugs too much credit for getting to the truth about the felon.
I prefer to think they're just showing off so they won't lose votes in their districts over this congressional (and DOJ) coverup.

(157,375 posts)so the correspondence would come from him on behalf of the Committee (although both parties also do their own press releases, etc).
As I noted earlier, these "depositions" are done by the staff and lawyers, not the Committee members per se. You might recall the clips of depositions from several members of the 45 first administration including Jason Miller and Bill Barr, shown by the January 6th Committee (from their "first" big hearing, and you see there is just a handful of people in there with the witnesses and their own lawyers) -
The GOP has wiped most of the J6 Committee stuff although obviously there are copies in other locations, but as an example, here is a copy of a J6 Committee Subpoena to Pat Cipollone, with Bennie Thompson featured on the letterhead - https://www.justsecurity.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/january-6-clearinghouse-cipollone-subpoena-letter-june-29-2022.pdf
The issue might be how much of the deposition would they release and whether they would cherry pick out of it (where the (D)s on the Committee will need to vociferously monitor this).

(1,241 posts)It might be a moot point since the Felon would just pre emptively pardon her.

(13,160 posts)She'll say whatever tRump wants her to say in the hopes of receiving a pardon.
And while I'm at it..... why does anyone believe the Epstein files will implicate tRump? There's been plenty of time for the DOJ to whitewash them, they'll have tRump looking clean as the driven snow.
