Dr. Oz under fire after declaring war on the sick: 'Won't tolerate it anymore'

Dr. Mehmet Oz, President Donald Trumps Administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, declared that the administration will no longer tolerate what he called a culture that makes it easy to be sick in America. Framing childhood illness as a failure of parenting and physical activity rather than medical need, Oz linked obesity to national security and warned that industries would be forced to caooperateor face government retaliation.
Ozoften called a conspiracy theorist who has been widely criticized for promoting quack productsappeared to endorse an authoritarian vision of public health, suggesting that under Trump and Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Americans would no longer be allowed to remain sick without consequences, and threatened industry with demands to either cooperate or face retribution.
He also railed against what he called the over-medicalization of American societyparticularly among childrenbut failed to distinguish between conditions driven by behavior and those rooted in biology or beyond individual control.
Youre diagnosing problems that probably should be dealt with with the parents, he told Fox News Business, referring to childrens health, or by going out and playing, or just dealing with issues and teaching kids how to mental resilience [sic].

And her great friend and world renowned astronaut Gayle King . That fiasco sure died quickly didnt it . Many of these big celeb types are just as much charlatans as the rest.
And here I was thinking that Himalayan salt sh*t was AI generated, that she couldnt possibly be hawking such blatant quackery. But I guess, what with Oz and Phil and the guy who wrote that fake autobiography about his rise from addiction, that I shouldnt be surprised at all
I agree that she sucks for platforming these 2 douches.
I'm pretty sure the miracle salt thing is total deepfake/AI bullshit. I've seen that video ad pop up on Youtube. It looks like it's not real. It reminds me of the fake Kelly Clarkson gummies weight loss crap.

(95 posts)while she did promote them, am sure there are/were more factors and people involved in the decision process made at that time. Also, sadly, fame and money affect people, you know, power corrupts and all that. Not many survive with their basic morals and humanity intact but some do I believe, or at least come back to it, just not enough people do that. She's an easy target for weight loss scammers.
I'm sure you all have noticed there are a sh*t ton of fake AI videos out right now by the way. If it surprises you it's probably a load of BS but worth doing due diligence on all, just to be sure, IMHO.

The woman has always bounced from one great idea to another, like a ping pong ball. I suspect having to pick her guests five days a week made her weirdly incapable of focusing on one thing for too long, but they were all the most fabulous, fascinating thing as she gushed and sold them to her fans.
Damn, even as a teenager, I was pissed that this crap is what replaced Phil Donohue.

(7,212 posts)I was just commenting in general. As far as Oprah is concerned, I have been watching her platform really weird people since she started her show in Chicago. I used to think it was useful to expose the weirdos, especially the racist idiots she would host. Unfortunately, it seemed to have the reverse effect on our screwed up American populace. What should have been exposed and left in the fringes has moved mainstream. It's really sick. So at this point in time, I would blame her or anyone that gives these weirdos a platform knowing the end result.

She didn't. We didn't. I chose to call them both charlatans years and years ago. Especially Dr. Phil with his made-up conflicts for ratings. Jerry Springer was soooooooooo much better at that game.

You can blame Oprah for having a show you don't like. You can blame her for promoting charlatans. But it's a stretch to blame her for Oz being made head of CMS.
The fault for that lies with Trump and RFK, Jr., who appointed Oz. And the fault for Trump and RFK, Jr. being in charge of our health care system? That's with the American voters.

(6,411 posts)I already jump through more hoops and lose more of privacy because I have a monthly script (doable with 3 separate month scripts) for my pain meds. I figure before I'm planted, they'll try to strip those away from me. Woe be unto the person who has to deal with me with my lupus and fibro both flare up at the same time, especially when rain begins to approach the area and kick off the stenosis and arthritis in my spine. I will kill.... !
Seriously, tho... I worry about this. If they start to go all authoritarian on what drugs can and cannot be dispensed and for what, there's going to be a lot of violence and death in the country. I've done some research, and to taper off my Effexor med, it would take me close to a decade, and even then there are bad side effects for years once you're off it. Same with several of the SSRI's out there. I know what I'm like if I miss a couple of days of dosage, and you do not want to go through that. There aren't enough treatment centers anywhere to deal with all the people on SSRI's who'd be going thru withdrawals that could lead to suicides. I've also got meds that are being used off-label to treat my fibro. If they go full authoritarian, I"m assuming that the off-label use would no longer be allowed. It's damned scary, AFAIC. But I can hear the sound bites right now on PSA's... "Let go of that drug, and let God heal you!" Because by then we'll all be living in a theocracy, and this concept is right up their alley...

His word-salad drivel isn't just annoying, it's potentially lethal. But then, that's why Trump appointed him. The malicious child calling itself KING wants to destroy the country, because he knows, as does anyone with the mental faculties of a potted plant, that he could never have won an honest election without cheating, just as he could never win at golf without cheating. And he resents the fact that everyone with the exception of the brain-dead yahoos that still support him knows that he's a fraud, a thief, and a pathological liar.

(20,096 posts)What about fucking genetics, Dr. Oz? What kind of witch doctor are you?
Despite my husband's inheriting a bad heart, developing Type II diabetes, he made changes in his lifestyle with diet and exercise to starve off the effects of what would kill him in the end. I changed how I cooked to not only aid me in losing weight and keeping it off, but centered my lifestyle around his to increase his quality of life of life as well.
But after COVID, life changed for most of us. As life changed for millions of Americans despite medications and lifestyle changes. For Dr. Oz to heartlessly blame the sick for the problems we face today, is CRUEL. For he blames the disabled, the deformed, the elderly, etc.
Karma is a bitch Dr. Oz. There will come a day when you become sick! For she will not be merciful for the things you said about others.

(736 posts)Can just "deal" with cancer? Maybe instead of giving those kids chemo meds, they need to be out running around in the fresh air? That will totally kill the cancer.
Blackjackdavey
(237 posts)His basic premise regarding children is not wrong. Understanding that many childhood illnesses are preventable or behavioral and that parenting or lack thereof does play a major role in childhood illness isn't wrong. He's also not wrong that diet and companies marketing garbage not food to children and parents is a major factor. However, as mentioned above already, the big money polluting industries and tech industries also are major contributors and we know they have no intention of reigning that in. But the major point I want to make, is the reason many children and families are stuck in a cycle of illness, generation from generation is socioeconomic, environmental and cultural. Families can't afford increasingly expensive healthy food, they don't have access to parks, they don't have basic nutritional information or accurate information of any kind, they don't have any idea how what positive parenting, behavior management and prosocial skills are and Oz along with the man behind the curtain do not want to acknowledge or address any of those things. (Who am I kidding they don't understand or know what those things are either.) Families often like to pathologize their children in order to mask overall family dysfunction, our government is doing the same thing.
Therefore, added together, he starts out right, ends up sadly wrong.

(909 posts)I believe Dr. Oz is part of MAHA movement.
I have family members that are part of this movement and MAGA, also.
This is some of the crazy stuff they believe.
All disease is the result of diet and environment.
There is a secret cure for cancer that is being suppressed by the pharmaceutical industry.
COVID was manufactured in the lab.
They send me links to unproven cancer cures, like ivermectin.
Additionally, they refuse to be vaccinated.
In 1986, I was diagnosed with Crohns.
There are some people that are genetically predisposed to the disease (not diet or environment).
I was at greater risk of lymphoma, which I was diagnosed with 4 years later.
Lymphoma returned 2x in 2002 and 2019.
Unfortunately, there will probably be Americans who will not be better off with this quacks in government.
Blackjackdavey
(237 posts)This: All disease is the result of diet and environment. Even Crohns, even cancer, even genetic disposition. I think it is probably safe to discount "all." But this is what environmental justice is all about. (And Biden's extraordinarily useful environmental justice map.) We know there are cancer clusters, asthma clusters, lead poisoning clusters, etc. around the country. We know this is the result of polluting industries carefully located in or near communities of lower socioeconomic means and we know the cycle of poverty can lock people into those environments for multiple generations. We also know American sociopathapitalists don't want to talk about that.
