Trump's plan to bully Greenland for 'game-changing' minerals backfired: report

Source: Raw Story

July 27, 2025 8:55PM ET

President Donald Trump's plan to bully another country into giving up its rare earth minerals appears to have backfired, according to a new report.

The Washington Post reported on Sunday that Trump's previous statements about controlling Greenland for national security seem to have been part of a larger plot to get favored access to the country's rare earth minerals. Greenland has two-thirds of the minerals most crucial to the United States, which are used by technology companies to build their products, according to the report.

One mine is said to have enough minerals to operate for 1,000 years, according to the report. Tony Sage, who owns the professional soccer team in Perth, Australia, told The Post that the mine is a "game-changing rare earth mine for the West.”To that end, the Trump administration sent a "letter of interest" to another local mining company offering a $120 million loan to help expand their operations.

However, that plan appears to have backfired as Greenland officials say the country's mining industry doesn't need to grow that quickly. "We don’t need to be the greatest mining country in the world," Naaja Nathanielsen, Greenland's mining minister, told The Post. "To run a small country and a small economy like ours, we need a good stable income over time that benefits the people and protects the environment.”

They want to keep their economy stable for the long term. Trump’s offer of money and Greenland’s rejection of it should be a lesson to other country’s, universities and corporations.

I know, wishful thinking.

One of the worst "Big Lies" is that population growth is always good. There are all sorts of qualifiers and I understand they benefit from Denmark's welfare state (a good thing), but Democracies seem to work better at a lower population size where people have common interests.

Exactly!

The economic model of this world needs to evolve from the rapacious capitalism that accelerates the conversion of finite resources to pollution, leaving future generations with ravaged lands and catastrophic climate change.

Do we, or do we not, care about our grandchildren? Pro-Life begins not at conception, but with developing a sustainable economy which conserves the resources and environmental ecosystems which support life itself.

8. A mineral bonanza in Greenland is a mirage

Geologist Minik Rosing, a native Greenlander and professor at the University of Copenhagen, argues that the assumptions about getting rich quickly from untapped resources in Greenland are akin to planning to get wealthy by playing the lottery. The widespread lack of detailed knowledge about geology, mining, and minerals has resulted in, he says, an almost "mythological misunderstanding" of what rare earth elements truly are.

"In geology, we say what characterizes rare earths is that they are neither rare nor earth. They are a group of metals that are commonly occurring in many rock types, and there are large known deposits of them throughout the world," Rosing explained.

According to Rosing, nothing points to a special concentration of minerals and rare earths in Greenland, and there are many places in the world where minerals are easier and cheaper to obtain, such as in the USA. In the U.S. Geological Survey's overview of known rare earth reserves from 2024, Greenland sits eighth in the table, ranked just behind the US but far behind countries such as China, Vietnam, and Brazil.

16. Judicial Watch ask for all records regarding the purchase of Greenland

Tuesday
Judicial Watch hereby requests that the Department of State provide the following records:
1. All records regarding the proposed purchase or acquisition of the Greenland territory by the United States.
2. All records regarding the visit of Donald Trump, Jr. to Greenland in January 2025.
3. All email messages sent or received by Consul Monica Bland containing the term "Trump".

... maybe even Judicial Watch could be helpful this time!
