Senate GOP quietly urges House to shift approach on shutdown talk

Source: The Hill

07/28/25 6:00 AM ET

Senate Republicans say President Trump has made it clear that he doesn’t want a government shutdown, and they’re urging House GOP lawmakers to tone down their approach to the Sept. 30 funding deadline. House Republicans jammed Senate Democrats in March with a partisan funding bill, which Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (N.Y.) reluctantly voted for to avoid a shutdown.

But the political dynamics are different now. Schumer is under heavy pressure to fight harder against Trump and his MAGA-allies, heightening the chance of a shutdown if Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) tries to use the same playbook. “I know that our side won’t want a shutdown, Trump hates that and rightly so,” said a Republican senator, who requested anonymity to discuss conversations with the White House.

The senator said “the fate of the approps bills” to fund the government in fiscal year 2026 will be the focus of the GOP conference before it leaves for a four-week August recess.

A second Republican senator who requested anonymity said that Trump, who dined with Senate Republicans at the White House recently to celebrate the passage of the One Big, Beautiful Bill Act, has made it clear to his allies on Capitol Hill that he wants to avoid a shutdown in the fall.

There is little to nothing left to "shut down" so let it shut down. Give the ultimatum to the GOP to RESCIND any "rescissions" or "promised rescissions", restore what was illegally cut and/or frozen, or THEY will OWN the shutdown because we won't support the lack of "bipartisanship" (in quotes), since THEY are in the majority. Take hostages.

And if they decide to "go nuclear" (removing the filibuster completely for any type of legislation, which they can do with a simple majority), then they will REALLY own what will happen as a consequence.

What are they going to do? Cut Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security? Reduce CBP staff at ports of Entry? Withhold funding by the DOE? Cancel Veterans Benefits/Close Hospitals?

What they don't get? They fucked us over. We have nothing to lose now. And that makes the Democratic Party Voters extremely dangerous. Not the indie leftists, not the non-voters -

The Democratic Party Voters. Start calling our Democratic Reps and Sens right this minute.
