Republicans across the country are pushing bills to stop government 'weather modification'

Source: NBC News

July 29, 2025, 5:00 AM EDT

For years, outlandish theories about the U.S. government’s using airplanes to spray harmful chemicals over U.S. homes or powerful elites controlling the weather were relegated to the fringes of society. Not anymore.

As the internet has provided rocket fuel for such claims, Republican lawmakers across the country are introducing, passing and enacting laws to ban “weather modification” and environmental geoengineering and allude to the use of “chemtrails,” a longtime theory that planes are spreading chemical agents on an unsuspecting public. As more people are exposed to dangerous flooding, the GOP lawmakers have pointed to the fringe theories as potential explanations for extreme weather, pushing them further into the political mainstream. (Scientists have found evidence tying the increasing frequency of extreme weather to climate change.)

Republican lawmakers in nearly 20 state legislatures have proposed such legislation, with governors in Tennessee and Florida having signed bills into law. On the federal level, Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., and Tim Burchett, R-Tenn., recently introduced the “Clear Skies Act,” which would outlaw forms of geoengineering and hit alleged weather modifiers with penalties of up to $100,000 for each violation and potential prison sentences of up to five years.

“It’s not a conspiracy theory,” Pennsylvania state Sen. Camera Bartolotta, a Republican who co-sponsored legislation in her state, said in an interview. “All you have to do is look up.”

This is why we need more focus on our state parties (and I know in a number of cases, some of the party infrastructure is either almost non-existent or includes those who are locked in bitter "ideological" battles on direction, within the state party leadership).

Chemtrails are contrails (condensed water vapor). There are no "chemtrails". But Democrats and progressives are smart enough to know this.

oceans are getting warmer. The earth is moving faster. The stratosphere is eroding.

Many of these problems were created by mankind, and yet the GQP only worries about their pockets and power.

and they found one in the hated government is changing the weather. These people are wackadoodles.

One rigid-brain delusion invents another. They are NEVER wrong in their own minds, because they are so superior in intellect, morals, character, and of course, money and audible volume.

a 'weather changer' or 'modifier'? The scale of such a weather modifier or changer in reality would have to be thousands of miles in scope, thus anything that anyone that the GOP would charge would be laughed out of court immediately.

How typically GOP.

Only the ones that God sends. So it should be fine. Although it could still be Joe Biden's fault.

Joe Biden. Of course.

Why would Joe do that, when he is dedicating so much time and money to getting aid to the same people?

Donʻt try to dazzle them with logic.

This was from a young female physical therapist in a beautiful water PT space that my Dad built for his Eagle Scout project in the 50ʻs when it was used for the community and not businesses...in their wisdom, this nonprofit kicked all the kids out and started charging rent. Within a mile of me.

She had heads nodding all around her, my neighbors. Made me physically feel unwell and cancel my PT there. I admit to a small meltdown.

We are in trouble, people.

To the OPʻs message, why the actual f would we want to exclude being able to change the weather if we need to, which we obviously do, with what appears to be coming? Maybe it is possible to turn hurricanes away by seeding clouds to cool areas. Assuming and requiring that these would be using safe methods, why the f would we not want to be able to do so?

Itʻs not 8 am yet and I want to bang my head on something. Got to go do something useful. Love you all DU.

All the GOP has done for the last 15-20 years is normalize fucking delusional conspiracy theories--each more ridiculous than the last--with little to no consequence.

The media and every politician in this country should have laughed them out of the public sphere back when we still had the chance. Instead, they keep making all this delusional shit fucking mainstream among their party, and now the entire country is forced to suffer for it.
