New York Democrats unveil their own mid-decade redistricting scheme, targeting future elections

Source: NBC News

July 29, 2025, 5:13 PM EDT / Updated July 29, 2025, 5:39 PM EDT

As Texas Republicans slowly move forward with plans to redraw congressional maps mid-decade, Democrats in New York plowed ahead Tuesday with their own scheme to counter any GOP redistricting efforts.

But the effort faces a long, arduous path forward, and it wouldn't be scheduled to go into effect for years, illustrating the limited options at Democrats' disposal as they hunt for ways to counter the GOP redistricting play in Texas.

Legislative Democrats in the blue stronghold unveiled a bill that would allow state lawmakers in Albany to conduct mid-decade redistricting — but only if another state were to do it first. The proposal would, if it were enacted, effectively set up the prospect of a national redistricting tit-for-tat between Republicans and Democrats, with control of the House of Representatives in Washington potentially on the line.

However, there are key differences between what's happening in New York and what's happening in Texas, including the timing of any actual map changes. Texas Republicans are looking to immediately enact new district boundaries for the 2026 elections. The bill in New York, which is technically a legislatively referred constitutional amendment, would allow the Legislature to redraw congressional districts if another state engaged in mid-decade redistricting.

The stories are essentially all the same. A couple democratic leaders say “they better not push that button… because we’ll be forced to fight back!”… or (as with Beto) we should punch first and harder… but it all appears to be a charade to convince the base that at least someone is fighting.

The problem appears to be a lack of ammunition. The blue states are either structurally constrained from making changes (because Democrats tend to oppose gerrymandering and passed laws to restrict it), or they are already gerrymandered in our favor and there isn’t much juice left to squeeze… or both.

We inherited a moderate Democrat from Plattsburgh and I voted for him. But then he retired in 2015 and had a local meetup to introduce his chosen successor, Aaron Woolf, who I liked a lot, made GOTV calls for him. But that was when Stefanik inexplicably won and we've been stuck with her ever since.

All of this plays into invalidating the results of the 2026 elections if Lord Orange Tiny Penis' team loses. This will be fought in the courts until it gets to the SCOTUS and the Tangerine Micro Phallus wins 6-3

and CA is doing the same thing:
Creating Dem friendly districts, which will surely be appealed to the Supreme court, about he same time TX's map arrives. Or, hold all redistricting cases and rule en mass. So the SC can't rule in favor of TX without ruling in favor of CA and NY.

And if they did, it wouldn't make it to the court with TX because they can move much faster since both CA and NY would have to amend their constitutions before they could redraw any lines.

If I recall correctly, one of the items in one of Biden's bills was to ban partisan gerrymandering nationwide, and to set up independent redistricting commissions in all of the states. But of course, we can't have nice things now, can we??
