Trump gives drugmakers 60 days to slash prescription drug prices

Source: NBC News

July 31, 2025, 4:13 PM EDT

President Donald Trump sent letters to more than a dozen major drugmakers Thursday demanding that they lower the cost of prescription drugs in the U.S. within 60 days. In the letters — which Trump published on his social media platform Truth Social — the drugmakers were told to offer the “full portfolio” of their existing medications to Medicaid patients at the same prices paid abroad, also known as the “most favored nation” rule.

He also told drugmakers to “guarantee” that patients on Medicare, Medicaid and private insurance get the same lower prices that are paid abroad for all newly approved drugs “both upon launch and moving forward.” He also demanded that drugmakers return any additional revenues earned abroad to U.S. taxpayers, and create a “direct to consumer” option for certain medications that would also be offered at lower prices.

”Make no mistake: a collaborative effort towards achieving global pricing parity would be the most effective path for companies, the government, and American patients,” Trump wrote in the letters. ”But if you refuse to step up, we will deploy every tool in our arsenal to protect American families from continued abusive drug pricing practices.”

It’s unclear, experts say, whether Trump has the authority to force drugmakers to lower the cost of their prescription drugs without the help of Congress.

By 1 August, tomorrow. Today they look a little ragged. I heard them saying as I approached, “produce this, bitch.” It’s unclear whether I can order them around.

How does trump make the economy great? He orders it to become great. No heavy lifting or thought involved.

This is just another "The Felon says he's going to," which makes his base say "He is" or even "He did," either of which work out to "What a wonderful president he is!"

He really knows how to work them, but empty promises won't boost the popularity he craves so much.

Btw -- if he's at 42 percent overall, what must his numbers be with Democrats?

They'll all go to a nice dinner in New York or Chicago, discuss whether it wouldn't be more profitable to drop a bunch of critical generic drugs (like Albuterol or Methotrexate), that they've tweaked to turn into New Brand Name medicines that are Just Right For You (if your doctor says so) -
- creating a years long shortage of the old generic meds while they push the slightly better (maybe) new, improved patent meds -

- and as compounding or third tier foreign manufacturers struggle to keep up with a sudden rush of generic orders by people who can't afford or get prescriptions for these "new" meds.

The amount my Medicare part D prescription drug plan does NOT cover on some of my prescriptions is absurd, especially since they're all generics. *grumble*

I swear, I think some of the private insurance companies that sell part D prescription drug plans and Medicare supplement plans must be making a fortune, considering how much they charge and how little they cover, and I'm salty as hell about it! Medicare is getting to be a joke, what with all the money we have to pay out to private insurance companies for those things!

We DESPERATELY need universal health care in this country! And I'm not talking about "Medicare for all;" I'm talking about something that covers our health care expenses WITHOUT private insurance companies getting in the middle of everything and fucking things up so they can continue to leech money out of everybody!

This concludes tonight's rant; you may now return to your regularly scheduled activities.

expansion, etc. If Medicare-for-All doesn't, it has no chance of passing any time soon. That's just a fact and why we'll be here with no universal coverage in 20 years.

He had the opportunity to lower drug prices in his big, ugly bill. He chose to increase them. He had the opportunity to help Medicaid recipients in that same bill. He instead threw them off their medical coverage. He's pulling this shit so that the brain-dead assholes who support him have cover to continue supporting a President who stripped them of their medical coverage and deliberately increased drug prices.
