'Not a damned penny!' 'Abandoned' Texas flood survivors prepare to clash with officials

Source: Raw Story

July 31, 2025 7:24AM ET

Survivors of the deadly July 4 flood in Central Texas are planning to confront state lawmakers next week after their disaster response has left many feeling “abandoned,” The New York Times reported Thursday. “I get that people have to go home and return to their lives,” said Mike Richards, whose property was ravaged by the flood, speaking to The New York Times. “But you can’t help but feel abandoned.”

Richards was one of many Texans along the Guadalupe River who have worked tirelessly with volunteers to search for survivors, and he joins a growing number of frustrated residents planning to attend a Texas legislative committee on Aug. 7 to confront lawmakers on what they say has been an inadequate response.

“Not a damned penny came through this gate from my taxpaying dollars,” Richards said. “And I don’t understand why.” Both local and federal officials have faced scrutiny for the response to the flood, which killed at least 138 people, making it the deadliest flood in the United States in nearly 50 years.

Some experts have laid blame almost entirely on local officials and their failures to proactively prepare, given the region’s nickname of “flash flood alley.” Local law enforcement and officials have struggled to answer questions and, at times, have outright dodged inquiries from members of the press.

what Republicans in Texas have said ever since they heard Reagan say it is "The government isn't the solution, the government is the problem."

You can understand their point. Many of them have ancestors who came to Texas specifically so that they could revolt against México, where slavery was illegal and turn Texas into a slave state. Not only that, but after they lost the war the US government finally got word to the slaves, after two years, that they were free.
This sort of big government meddling just doesn't sit well with many freedom loving Texans.

How about a story reviewing how:
-State Farm took care of their policy holders
-Allstate
-Liberty Mutual
-GEICO

I see so god-damned many quippy commercials about them and no one ever holds them to account for their skeevy response. FEMA should be on hand to coordinate response, issue loans, provide immediate needs, food/shelter, etc.

Insurance is supposed to ultimately help them get back on their feet as quickly as possible.

FEMA should be there to hold THEM to account.

Instead, policies are undercut, eliminated and the rest of us get higher premiums to help assure their tidy fucking profit.

Any democrat want to take that idea and run with it??

is that if you read your policy, homeowner's (or even tenant's) insurance does NOT cover "flooding". THAT is what "flood insurance" is for and that is pretty much only offered by the federal government (for a pretty penny that most cannot afford).

And there have been a number of hearings (that when posted on DU, get yawns). This blip was from last year -

Also FEMA floodmaps are available online. Who knows for how long, but before anyone buys a property it just takes a few minutes to look up the flood zone. I've been through three hurricanes since I bought my place and I'm glad that I took the time to "do my research".

My own house was once listed in a flood plain 50 yr ago, but was subsequently changed to a non-flood zone in the 70's. This wasn't disclosed to us at time of purchase (unless it was buried in some fine print I missed). My old farmer neighbor told us all about this after we moved in and our area had a freak flash flood one spring in 2011. We had a foot of water in our basement despite TWO sump pumps running constantly; they just couldn't keep up with the inflow. And there was a river 20' wide and 4' deep flowing through our front yard from all the agricultural field runoff behind our house.

So even people who think they're safe may in fact be living somewhere that is actually at risk, especially with the rapidly changing climate today.

flood policy that will kick in over the standard $250,000.

Someone in the Environmental group posted this link several months ago, it is used by insurance companies and lenders and is now shown on Zillow near the bottom of a property for sale.

And, thanks to their lobbying, have tweaked the system so that they are required by law to exist, even as they refuse to pay out anything to clients because they are not in the business of insuring people or property, they are in the business of making as much money off of misery as they can.

And, we let them. Every day we keep on paying their premiums and letting them cook up new ways to deny coverage, we let them.

But, we won't do anything about it. The programming worked.

as long as the industry is allowed to lobby and buy/pay for members of Congress.

The FIRST THING that should have been done in 2010 when the SCOTUS handed down the "Citizen's United" ruling that basically negated the McCain-Feingold Campaign Finance law, was to have those 2 (and anyone else), REDRAFT the legislation to address the SCOTUS concerns, and get some revised law passed (this was when Obama was still in office).

But that didn't happen.

but like the Crypto bros who funded a number of (D) campaigns, the Pharma bros and Insurance bros have done similar.

Unless and until we get this damn money requirement out of our elections, this will never be resolved. The hourly text and email "bega-thons" are not enough "to compete" against the massive dark money machine of the GOP unfortunately.

Unless and until we get this damn money requirement out of our elections every aspect of our lives and stop making it the most important thing in the universe, none of this will never be resolved.

That is the issue. The imbalance it creates in our elections is just one aspect of the damage being beholden to a piece of paper over everything else has caused our entire society, as well as the world that decided to emulate us. (I have said it before, the most dangerous export from this country is our culture. Why anyone would want to imitate it is beyond me, other than the 'I got mine, screw you' mentality, which is always appealing to some of the less... human... representatives of our society. I guess advertising works after all, eh?)

Of course, those of us who have some of that paper don't care about this topic. They would lose their 'power' if we actually decided to stop this 'money makes the world go around' crap. So, you end up with people (from all sides, I am afraid) who are not interested in fixing anything.

But, that is just my pitiful opinion.

Also, how is it that the rethugs have such a 'massive, dark money machine'? Are there no billionaires on the Democratic side? They cannot even approach the level of 'dark money' that is ruining our country?

Or, is it something else...?

I live in that area and had to evacuate. The practically word salad “article” s not indicative in any way of what is going on here, on the ground, misses the hearing that was held YESTERDAY entirely (there were some important findings), and once again is some dreck written by people states away who haven’t set one foot here to talk to anyone who was affected, attend even press conferences or the hearing, or interview local/state/federal officials in the area.

“Proactive preparation” was not a problem. A huge problem was petitions granted to remove areas from flood maps because local capitalists wanted to build camps and resorts right on the banks (“it’s sooooooo pretty!”) where it’s known to flood rapidly, without any of the “annoyances” of flood insurance requirements, building requirements, etc. A huge problem that morning was all the guys who would normally be tasked with emergency messaging and response being on the job (2 out of town on holiday vaycay, one sick), and you couldn’t even really blame them because 2 on vacation tried to do what they could as soon as they could, but nobody bothered calling them until 3 hours after the flood started taking out camps and homes and vacation spots. There were LOTS of stupid mistakes made, but it wasn’t about “proactive preparation.” Lots to report, real info, but you couldn’t tell from THIS article (or most others that aren’t from our area).
