Brutal arrest of Black student in Florida shows benefits of recording police from new vantage point

A video that captured the brutal arrest of a Black college student pulled from his car and beaten by officers in Florida has led to an investigation and calls for motorists to consider protecting themselves by placing a camera inside their vehicles.
William McNeil Jr. captured his February traffic stop on his cellphone camera, which was mounted above his dashboard. It offered a unique view, providing the only clear footage of the violence by officers, including punches to his head that cant clearly be seen in officer body camera footage released by the Jacksonville Sheriffs Office.
Since McNeil had the foresight to record the encounter from inside the vehicle, we got to see firsthand and hear firsthand and put it all in context what driving while Black is in America, said civil rights attorney Ben Crump, one of several lawyers advising McNeil.
All the young people should be recording these interactions with law enforcement, Crump said. Because what it tells us, just like with George Floyd, if we dont record the video, we can see what they put in the police report with George Floyd before they realized the video existed.

(23,649 posts)Do you leave your camera on until you arrive safely, then turn it on when youre out again? Where would it be mounted and where would one get the mounting needed. Can I do it myself and if not, who would mount it and give instructions? In all sincerity, Im not up on a lot of technical skills and at 78, I think Id feel a lot safer especially if Im in an accident. Thanks for your input..

Looks like he has his phone on a car mount that sits in and around the dash.
A lot of people also have front and back "dash cams." But I guess those wouldn't get the activity seen heremostly for collision evidence.
So to answer your question, it appears he began recording video on his phone after he was pulled over, because he felt uneasy about the police.

That cop was profiling. I hope he gets enough from his lawsuit to pay for his college loans and that cop gets fired.

Camera and audio.
Now I would suggest 2 cameras hooked up to live stream

(56,501 posts)The cops might destroy your phone if they realize you're recording. I'm seeing many instances of cops hitting phones out of people's hands, and ICE confiscating phones.

Oh, wow, look at you ! There you are on streaming! Look, your wife and kids can see how you do your job!

(41,134 posts)Note in particular the last sentence. The thug officer uses the passive voice, which is used when the writer wishes to de-emphasize. English and writing teachers criticize its use. It is considered to lack clarity and be cumbersome.
This thug-cop knows hes screwed.

(29,089 posts)Cloud capture to a secure location is recommended. While live broadcasting can be very effective in gaining public engagement. Keep in mind though, that not all of that "engagement" will be supportive.

However, this stuff with cops and young black males has been going on forever.
I used to tell my students to not argue about the ticket. Id say take the damn ticket and Ill show you how to behave in court. How to talk to a judge.
They would do that and win! They would be so proud of themselves for getting a ticket dismissed. The increase in their self confidence was palpable.

(23,369 posts)unlike a few DU'rs I don't believe all cops are bad; but too, too many are racist, and, or sexist! 😬
My opinion is from decades of listening to, or reading about people's experiences! Here in NYC, and around the country. Quite before George Floyd.

(21,636 posts)The thing which overwhelmed me was all of the recordings they had from car dash cams. I was barely aware such things existed, and yet it seemed like every car in Russia had one!

(77,258 posts)I saw that same footage and was amazed at how many had dashcams.
It really is spectacular.

(41,134 posts)And I saw the footage, I recall thinking, This guy is doing everything right. I think in particular, the student asked a brief question to clarify the officers orders. This was important because the orders conflicted and if he had chosen without clarification, the cop would have an excuse to go off on him.
That really impressed me.
When I taught interpersonal communication, I would encourage students to talk about these incidents. Did they ever have the stories. The students all had situations with cops subtly setting them up. We discussed how to handle such situations, though obviously when youre dealing with some LEO in a steroid-induced rage, there are limits.

(3,146 posts)In this day and age cops know about omnipresent camera surveillance. Yet their impulses to abuse those they've traditionally abused continue in spite of the higher risks of being caught. Those who can't control their impulses are, well, out of control.

(15,415 posts)the other day I almost got clocked in a very confusing intersection. When I got home I reviewed the vid and I saw the other person was at fault and just pulled out in front of me. I had to hit the brakes hard!!
No accident but I had to change my nappies when I got home...
