Delta Air Lines assures U.S. lawmakers it will not personalize fares using AI

WASHINGTON - Delta Air Lines said on Friday it will not use artificial intelligence to set personalized ticket prices for passengers after facing sharp criticism from U.S. lawmakers and broad public concern.

Last week, Democratic Senators Ruben Gallego, Mark Warner and Richard Blumenthal said they believed the Atlanta-based airline would use AI to set individual prices, which would “likely mean fare price increases up to each individual consumer’s personal ‘pain point.’”

Delta said it has not used AI to set personalized prices but previously said it plans to deploy AI-based revenue management technology across 20% of its domestic network by the end of 2025 in partnership with Fetcherr, an AI pricing company.

“There is no fare product Delta has ever used, is testing or plans to use that targets customers with individualized prices based on personal data,” Delta told the senators in a letter on Friday, seen by Reuters. “Our ticket pricing never takes into account personal data.”

Are not fares already variable and "personalized" depending on which country the online purchase originates from? Oopsie Daisy Aug 3 #1

I think I recall hearing one of the "selling points" of many VPN services is that someone can change their IP to appear as though they are in the UK to book their reservation, and the fares shown people in the UK are less than the fares offered to people in the US.

There's no global parity.

was that if say, someone has to suddenly book a flight to deal with an emergency, and are willing to pay a higher premium at that time out of necessity, then some time down the road, if that person wants to book a flight for non-emergency purposes (leisure, etc.), they (by name) will have already been "flagged" by the AI program as (a sucker) "able to pay more", so they will only be shown higher prices for their flights versus what would have normally been offered.

I.e., it might not even have anything to do with the internet as the person could be booking through calling the airline directly (or book through a travel agent).

So, can Walmart or Aldi or Food Lion change the price of a loaf of bread based on data they have of your past purchases?

Something sounds pretty fishy to me. And I would hope that they are boycotted until they realize that is absolutely despicable.

As an aside, I remember questioning human resources about the increase in our health insurance premiums. I asked why the premium couldn’t be a percentage of income, instead of a straight charge. An employee making $100K a year pays the same as someone making minimum wage. She said that isn’t allowed because you can’t charge different amounts of money for the same “Product”. I remember hating the use of the word Product, but that’s what our premiums are. A product to be purchased.

so, how can delta do this??

This is the bottom of the barrel. It is pure greed in its most inhuman form, and there is nothing left beyond it.
