'Quit now': MAGA freaks out on GOP leader after he blocks Trump from recess appointments

Source: Raw Story

August 3, 2025 2:00PM ET

A decision by Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) to schedule pro forma sessions throughout the August recess which will, in effect, stop Donald Trump from making any recess appointments, has set off a firestorm among the president's MAGA followers.

According to CSPAN's Craig Caplan, "Senate just agreed by unanimous consent at the request of Majority Leader Thune to hold pro forma sessions every 3 days following today’s session and not return for votes until Tuesday, Sept. 2nd. This agreement will block President Trump from making recess appointments."

For Trump's supporters, insult was added to injury because occasional Trump critics, Senators Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) and Susan Collins (R-ME), were sitting behind Thune and smiling as he made the motion.

That led one admirer of the president to post on X, "JUST IN: John Thune blocks President Trump from making recess appointments using pro-forma sessions. RINOs Susan Collins smirks behind him as Lisa Murkowski nods her head in approval. These anti-American people do not have Trump’s back."

You and the OP are making the point TSF hired them to lie and push the maga party line. I agree with that but they're still nowhere near qualified to perform the traditional responsibilities of their positions...which is my[ point. Do you see now?/b]

You're each here as Democratic Party supporters.

We're all here to support the Party, each other and our nation as a whole.

I see no need for assignations or controversy regarding this matter.

Here's to our united stand.

Here's to the restoration of our freedoms through our nation's return to reason's rule of law.

Remember Babel Fish from The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy?

I know I damn sure could use some assistance on a frequent basis parsing other's comments in such a way so as to understand what they're saying instead of just the words as they've spoken or written.

I'd love to have me a Babel Fish!

Understanding another's understanding of what they said from their perspective is most often accomplished for me through further inquiry of the individual in question.

I'm off to the garden and then in the kitchen for a bit.
Happy Monday to ya'!

This is actually pretty darned good news!

It's hard to imagine appointees who would be even worse than some of the ones the Senate has already approved, but I'm sure Schlump could find a way. Good work, Sen. Thune!

The post you replied to just mentioned "republicans in the Senate," so I took your comment as a more general statement about, well, republicans in the Senate.

In any case, I have no trouble believing that Murkowski and Collins were smiling in agreement with this development.

I'm aware that my view of thise two is less negative and more nuanced than that of some here, and I'm fine with that.

I think Thune did the right thing. Whatever happens after this remains to be seen, but for now I'm going to take this for what it's worth.

In these dark times, any small ray of light is welcome, afaic.

Edited to add: I didn't realize i had clicked on that flower emoji, but now that I see it there, I think it kinda fits.

Approving (or not) appointments is one of the few unique powers the Senate has. Giving it up so the Idiot in Chief can make unlimited recess appointments does the Senate no good. By keeping the rubber stamp firmly in their hands, they are in a better position to make deals with the Great Negotiator.

I see this as a self-serving decision that coincidentally happens to potentially benefit the rest of us too.

Or so it seems to me.
