Democratic senators negotiated for release of billions in funds in exchange for confirmation deals, sources say

In a whirlwind of negotiations over three days, Democrats asked for multiple billions in government funds to be released in exchange for a vote on a batch of nominees President Trump wanted confirmed before lawmakers left for their August break, sources told CBS News.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer was negotiating with GOP leadership for $5 billion for the National Institutes of Health, $1 billion for the Global Fund, $300 million for the World Food Program, $50 million to fight HIV in developing countries, about $140 million for the United Nations Children's Fund, and other money funding that had been previously approved, sources said.
After much back and forth, senators believed they had an agreement to get about 20 nominations through before Mr. Trump on Saturday nixed the deal, several sources said. Some of the negotiations were about Republicans not withholding funds Congress has already agreed to. Schumer wanted no clawbacks, including so-called pocket rescissions, two of the sources said, referring to presidential funding cut proposals to Congress that are very late in the fiscal year.
As of now, about 140 Trump nominees await a vote, including some 30 ambassadors. Among those are Mike Waltz, who is awaiting a confirmation vote as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, and Kimberly Guilfoyle, nominated for U.S. ambassador to Greece. Those who were confirmed Saturday include Defense Department officials Earl Matthews and Adam Telle; trade official Will Kimmitt; judicial officials Jeanine Pirro and Jason Quinones; and ambassadors Andrew Puzder for the European Union and Brian Burch for the Vatican. Also confirmed was Senate Majority Leader John Thune's son-in-law, Luke Lindberg, for an undersecretary post at the Agriculture Department.

(32,848 posts)Over the many years, Democrats have been programmed to
respect the institutions and offices that comprise government,
no matter who's in charge.
Schumer and the old guard cannot let go of this, and they run
the Democrats in the Congress and the Senate.
However, with inhuman fascism now controlling government,
there is, literally, no institution or office that is not corrupt or
compromised.
Thus, there will be no progress or improvement until the new
guard can take control and fight these monsters!

(8,340 posts)Just slow down the appointments as much as possible. Making a deal for funding is useless. Trump will just renege on it or get the gop congress to send recision packages and take it back.

(521 posts)He's talking about Schumer's, and the Democratic party's, seemingly endless tolerance for GOP betrayal and accepting crumbs in exchange for the keys to the kingdom. How can he take a deal with the GOP seriously when he is effectively asking them to restore funding already established that they have shown no qualms about rescinding already?
GOP: "We had no intention of honoring our previous funding vote, but you can trust us now. We're incredibly dependable, and Trump will back us."
Chuck Schumer: "Okay!"
Hard to forget this stellar performance:

(5,944 posts)On other things, not so great, sure.
But here, he held noncontroversial nominees for unfreezing funds. GOP rejected it, and will now aim for nuclear option. I think not budging before the recess and forcing them into that was pretty good.
I evaluate on a case-by-case basis, and my automatic instinct isn't to attack Democrats, so, YMWV.

(5,944 posts)They out here acting like the Dems are demanding new funding in exchange for confirmation votes. In fact, the Democrats are demanding that the administration cease and desist in blocking the funding already debated in committee and in the full body by both the House and Senate and approved by a regular and legal vote of the people's representatives. The administration is blocking funding. If they want their judicial nominees unblocked, they should stop blocking the funding already approved by the Congress.

Then, no--don't them another damn judge! Bring on the lawsuits to unblock funding.
