Trump has 'turned his back on the communities that voted for him,' 2028 hopeful Gov. Josh Shapiro says

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro slammed President Donald Trump for betraying his supporters in a fiery appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Thursday.
Shapiro, a Democrat who represents the pivotal swing state narrowly won by Trump in last Novembers election, accused the Republican of only showing up to make promises to blue-collar communities when he needs their vote and neglecting their concerns since returning to power.
Asked about his own appeal in a deep purple state, the governor answered: I think what they saw in me is someone who gives a damn about them, who treats them with respect where they go to college, they go to the military, they go to a union apprenticeship program. They saw in me someone who can actually cut through it and solve their problems.
And the difference between me and the president is he shows up in those areas. He talks a good game. And then when he gets to govern, he does the exact opposite.

(6,557 posts)Shapiro's Judaism has been a consistent element throughout his career. During his inaugural address, he mentioned being sworn in on Hebrew Bibles, one from the site of the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting. He has also been a vocal advocate against antisemitism, according to The Washington Post.

(6,557 posts)However, each demographic group faces its unique challenges and perceptions in the political landscape. Especially today with anti semitism on the rise across the nation. It's important to acknowledge and address these nuances when discussing the potential for diverse representation in the highest office.
It's a complex issue, isn't it?

(158,571 posts)(who I just found out had a real last name of "Shapiro" ) was elected the first Jewish governor of PA (in the '70s). He was later followed by Ed Rendell (in the 2000s), and now Josh Shapiro (in the 2020s).
So it also has to do with the circumstances of the moment and how dynamic that person is, at least enough to be able to capture a majority of the constituency willing to put the bigoted crap aside.

(49,696 posts)then it wasn't even an issue when we got Biden as our second Irish Catholic president.
Hardly anyone knows America elected an indigenous VP in the 1920s, Charles Curtis. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Curtis
Spiro Agnew being a Greek child of immigrants was seen as a favorable thing that helped Nixon back in 1968.
Our 2 woman presidential candidates did surprisingly well against the orange menace. I still think we can elect a woman president under the right circumstances.

(158,571 posts)Biden was actually also able to get in with a woman (black/South Asian) on the ticket as a VP.
I never ever thought I'd see the day!!!!

(6,557 posts)Such things are unlikely to happen again in my lifetime. The pendulum will continue to swing toward in the wrong direction with more bigotry, racism, anti semitism, misogyny, and homophobia.
Past performance is no guarantee of future success (as they say) and we're clearly in a backward slide. It will take a lot more than "if we did it with Obama and Kennedy then we can do it again".
I have very little faith in my "fellow Americans".

I remain hesitant to claim certainties... in an organic culture, some things regress while others simultaneously move forward.
