Exclusive: 'I won't humiliate myself': Brazil's president sees no point in tariff talks with Trump

Source: Reuters

As U.S. tariffs on Brazilian goods jumped to 50% on Wednesday, Brazil's President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva told Reuters in an interview that he saw no room for direct talks now with U.S. President Donald Trump that would likely be a "humiliation."

Brazil is not about to announce reciprocal tariffs, he said. Nor will his government give up on cabinet-level talks. But Lula himself is in no rush to ring the White House.

"The day my intuition says Trump is ready to talk, I won't hesitate to call him," Lula said in an interview from his presidential residence in Brasilia. "But today my intuition says he doesn't want to talk. And I won't humiliate myself."

Despite Brazil's exports facing one of the highest tariffs imposed by Trump, the new U.S. trade barriers look unlikely to derail Latin America's largest economy, giving Lula more room to stand his ground against Trump than most Western leaders.

Lula also indicated that Brazil isn't about to let tRump interfere with the prosecution of former right wing President Bolsonaro.

While it's specialty brands, something is definitely going on in the coffee world.

$18 / 2 lbs (up from $10) at Walmart.

Even if your brand isn't Brazil tariffed, prices will rise on every one. Because.

Thanks chump.

Or even if it’s Brazilian coffee. Commodities are globally traded, and a price increase in a major sector of the coffee market may raise the price of coffee overall.

Lots of good coffee around here but $18 for 12 ounces. I don’t think so.

It's as if they've never heard of the maxim "power in numbers." Imagine if all the democracies stood together as a bloc in this tariff nonsense. I'm sure there are those who would tell me "it's not that easy," but the fact is politics ain't easy.
