Trump says he plans to put a 100% tariff on computer chips, likely pushing up cost of electronics

WASHINGTON (AP) President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he will impose a 100% tariff on computer chips, likely raising the cost of electronics, autos, household appliances and other goods deemed essential for the digital age.
Well be putting a tariff on of approximately 100% on chips and semiconductors, Trump said in the Oval Office while meeting with Apple CEO Tim Cook. But if youre building in the United States of America, theres no charge.
The Republican president said companies that make computer chips in the U.S. would be spared the import tax. During the COVID-19 pandemic, a shortage of computer chips increased the price of autos and contributed to an overall uptick in inflation.

Demand for computer chips has been climbing worldwide, with sales increasing 19.6% in the year-ended in June, according to the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics organization..........................

is underway to meet surging demand for advanced semiconductors.
(Trump stopped it because it was part of Joe Bidens Chips and science act.)
The $28 billion Ohio One project, which initially broke ground in September 2022, is part of Intels long-awaited effort to make the state one of the leading hubs for advanced semiconductor manufacturing.
At the time, the Biden administration touted Intels investment as a boon for the U.S. industry following the passage of the CHIPS and Science Act, which has provided billions of dollars in incentives to chipmakers for project funding. However, action on the project has been slow, with multiple delays due in part to changing corporate strategy, market dynamics and limited capital.

(2,507 posts)$5 to $10 billion per plant and usually taking as much as a decade from inception to production.
What makes this even worse is that you need to have specialized equipment to create such a fab, and for the most part the US no longer manufactures that equipment directly, instead preferring to get it from South Korea or China.
This is going to be a stake to the heart of the AI industry.
Old Crank
(6,077 posts)Can be longer. that doesnot count the hiring and trainng of qualified workers which are haard to get in the US bcause we donot have much in the way of installed base to draw from.

Intel: Ohio plant likely canceled if company cant get new manufacturing customers
NEW ALBANY, Ohio (WCMH) Intel announced it will need to get external customers for its manufacturing division, or it may need to stop all work in Ohio.
Last week, Intel announced it is further slowing construction at its $28 billion manufacturing site in Licking County. Intel also said if it is unable to find external customers for a new manufacturing technology, it will likely have to stop all work in Ohio. The technology is called 14A and wont debut until 2027, so Intel will have some time to try and acquire the customers it needs. See previous coverage of Intels slowed construction in the video player above.
