Rubio, Noem Slapped With Lawsuit Over 'War' on Free Speech Amid Crackdown on Student Visa Holders

The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE), a nonpartisan free speech advocacy nonprofit, has filed a lawsuit against Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem over the Trump administrations war against noncitizens freedom of speech, seeking to block the enforcement of two federal immigration law provisions.
President Donald Trumps second term has featured a sharp crackdown on immigration, targeting not just the violent criminal illegal immigrants that were the centerpiece of his campaign messaging but those who have committed no crimes other than their lack of legal status, revoking temporary protected status (TPS) for hundreds of thousands of immigrants, and even detaining people who have shown up for their immigration court hearings. Many of the changes have been controversial, and polling shows a sharp reversal in support for the Trump immigration agenda, even among Republicans.
FIREs complaint, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, is brought by Stanford Universitys independent, student-run newspaper, The Stanford Daily, and Jane Doe and John Doe, two legal immigrants with student visas who engaged in pro-Palestinian speech and now fear deportation and visa revocation because of their expression.
Neither student has been accused of violating any Stanford University rules, nor have they been charged with or convicted of any crime.

BREAKING: FIRE is suing Secretary of State Marco Rubio, challenging the laws he is using to target lawfully present noncitizens for speech protected by the Constitution.
No administration should be able to deport lawfully present noncitizens for their opinions.

The man doesn't even make sense anymore, he's lost in his own lies, and everything he touches goes to Shit. So who is making all of this happen?

(77,296 posts)2/ FIREs suit seeks a landmark ruling that the First Amendment bars the government from deporting noncitizens for protected speech. Rubio has invoked two immigration lawsone allowing him to revoke visas, another letting him target speech seen as a threat to U.S. foreign policy.

(77,296 posts)3/ Rubio has already used these laws to strip Tufts student Rümeysa Öztürks visa over co-authoring a pro-Palestinian op-ed, and to target Columbia student Mahmoud Khalil for protesting in support of Gaza.

(77,296 posts)5/ In the United States, no one should fear a midnight knock on the door for voicing the wrong opinion. Free speech isnt a privilege the government hands out. Under our Constitution it is the inalienable right of every man, woman, and child, FIREs @CTFitzpatrick
