US to rewrite its past national climate reports

Source: AFP (Agence France-Presse)

US President Donald Trump's administration is revising past editions of the nation's premier climate report -- its latest move to undermine the scientific consensus on human-caused global warming.

The decision, announced by Energy Secretary Chris Wright during a CNN appearance Tuesday night, follows the government's revocation of the Endangerment Finding, a scientific determination that underpins a host of regulations aimed at curbing greenhouse gas emissions.

Asked by CNN's Kaitlan Collins why previous editions of the National Climate Assessment were no longer available online, former fracking company CEO Wright responded: "Because we're reviewing them, and we will come out with updated reports on those and with comments on those."

First published in 2000, the National Climate Assessment has long been viewed as a cornerstone of the US government's understanding of climate science, synthesizing input from federal agencies and hundreds of external experts.

This follows the release of a new climate study from the Department of Energy, authored by climate change contrarians, that among other shortcomings, misrepresented the work of cited climate scientists.

It's surprising (?) that the small government anti-bureaucracy cost-cutting anti-waste party is going to spend resources on rewriting past reports. Couldn't they just say those old reports are just the ravings of woke Commie environmentalist whackos, and let the new report "debunk" those key findings?

As a repository, the NOAA IR retains documents in their original published format to ensure public access to scientific information.

OMG! Six months on, and there are still corners of federal government who retain this kind of lefty sentimentality.

It's also an abuse of power. You cannot change the past. Not even by rewriting it or destroying what it left. This is insane.

Everything even before this administration started should've been archived, in anticipation of things like this.

although I worry that sometimes the pages being archived have coded dynamic elements and that doesn't get preserved correctly or at all. Some graphics ... Anyway I've seen some pages there that were missing a lot of pieces.

ETA - Also things aren't all organized and linked together like originally.

I use archive.org a lot, and it's one of maybe just 15 organizations that I've supported over the years. Along with Wikipedia.

10. 'Worst fears': Trump compared to Stalin for sabotaging decades of research

Raw Story, 8/7/25
https://www.rawstory.com/trump-climate/

He [Energy Secretary Chris Wright, who previously worked in the oil and gas industry] added to CNN that the climate reports “weren’t fair in broad-based assessments of climate change,” and “When you get into departments and look at stuff that’s there and you find stuff that’s objectionable, you want to fix it.”

The statement has triggered outrage and fear among scientists, who believe that their findings will be politicized or outright covered up.

Michael Mann, a renowned climate science researcher, told The Guardian, “This is exactly what Joseph Stalin did." The Soviet dictator was notorious for politicizing government data, even jailing and executing census analysts who produced figures that embarrassed the state.

Interesting he brought up the Census - you've probably read today that tRump wants the next census to exclude people without legal residency, despite the Constitution's wording to count the "whole number of persons in each state"
