Rep. Jamie Raskin Says FBI Should 'Refuse' Orders To Track Down Texas Democrats
Source: msn/Huff Post

WASHINGTON ― Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) is urging Federal Bureau of Investigation agents to resist taking part in efforts to track down a group of Texas Democrats who fled their state in protest of a mid-decade redistricting effort aimed at boosting Republicans ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
Raskin, the top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, which conducts oversight of the FBI, said the agency has no authority to locate and investigate the state legislators as one Senate Republican announced on Thursday.
The FBI is not a national secret police force operating at the beck and call of President Trump, Raskin said in a statement to HuffPost. It has no legal authority to track down state legislators who are breaking no federal laws just for standing up to a Republican scheme to purge Democrats from Congress and rig our elections. FBI personnel should refuse to participate in this act of political harassment and persecution, the lawmaker added.
Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) said earlier on Thursday that FBI Director Kash Patel granted his request for the federal government to assist with locating the group of Texas House Democrats, who are in Chicago this week to meet with state lawmakers there. Texas Republicans are unable to proceed with changing their congressional maps without a quorum present in the state legislature.

(42,044 posts)I am really tired of the false equivalency. Nobody cowered before Joe Biden, he did very reasonable civilized things. however, Jake, Tapper, and all of the right wing sycophants made it sound like he was the authoritarian. Or he was senile theyre not sure which.

(42,044 posts)No amount of logical argument is going to convince these people not to be racist and misogynist. We have to grab as much power as we can whenever we can. The media is making it sound like this redistricting is normal and that both sides. do it. Democrats try to craft their policies to help the most people. Republicans want to rely on gimmicks and being smart asses and then they will just say cry harder. Is that what nazis said to support Hitler?

(38,335 posts)... I believe the rank and file employees in the FBI and DOJ are in agreement with Jamie Raskin.
They're embarrassed by Chump. They don't want to become the gestapo or secret police of the Chump regime, and many will resist. How long they last there is anyone's guess. The Executive Branch (White House) is not supposed to have the power to fire employees of the law enforcement agencies, and that's by design.

(39 posts)I hope you are correct but I have serious doubts.
I don't know anyone who was or is now an FBI agent and therefore have no first hand awareness as to whether they have blind loyalty to the current monster in the White House. However, I have known a Secret Service Agent since we first worked together at another federal agency in the 1970s. Eventually, he transferred to the Secret Service. He has admitted that he and most SS agents are far right-wingers who admire Rethugs for their tough guy attitude. He's a MAGA who loves guns and hates Democrats. If most SS agents feel the same as he does (and maybe they don't) there is no question in my mind that they would likely obey orders from the Leader.
I truly hope that FBI and SS agents, who have different responsibilities, are not in lockstep about unlawfully preying upon American citizens. With 3 and a half more years of Trump and his henchmen we might find out.
As for firings by Trump no one is safe no matter what their job description is. He breaks any law he wants to.
