President Donald Trump will replace Internal Revenue Service Commissioner Billy Long, just two months after he was confirmed to the job.
Long will be nominated as U.S. ambassador to Iceland, he said on social media Friday afternoon.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will serve as the acting IRS commissioner, according to a White House official and another person familiar with the matter, both speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss a move that hadnt been announced yet. It was unclear when Long would step down. The White House official confirmed the plan to name Long envoy to Reykjavik.
Long had made several changes that frustrated leaders in the Treasury Department, according to two other people familiar with the presidents decision, also speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss a sensitive matter. He had planned to start tax filing season around Presidents Day in February about a month behind schedule and also preemptively announced plans to eliminate the IRSs Direct File program, even though Treasury officials had not decided to do so.
