Texas AG Ken Paxton sues to remove 13 Democrats over quorum-breaking walkout

Source: USA Today

Aug. 8, 2025, 8:06 p.m. ET

EL PASO, Texas - Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has filed a lawsuit to remove 13 Democratic state legislators from office amid the ongoing standoff over redrawing U.S. House districts to help President Donald Trump and the GOP maintain their majority in the 2026 midterms.

The suit, filed with the Texas Supreme Court on Aug. 8, asserts that the prolonged absence of the Democratic legislators amounts to an abandonment of their elected offices. The 13 Texas state Democrats were part of a contingent of lawmakers who left the state on Aug. 2 in an effort to deny Republicans the quorum needed to pass their proposed new congressional maps.

The maps, demanded by Trump and pushed through by Texas GOP Gov. Greg Abbott, are designed to give Republicans five new Texas seats in the U.S. House of Representatives following the November 2026 election.

Paxton targeted legislators from Texas' most populous cities, such as Austin, Houston and Dallas.

... and the GOP loves a good filibuster. He has no power to do anything. If those Democrats are acting against their constituents' interests, they'd be voted out next year. And not one will be. They lost this argument once before during Rick Perry's term. And then Democrats only went to New Mexico as guests of the NM Governor.

We Texas Democrats are enjoying the messy divorce that he's currently going through with his wife---she says she's doing it, at long last, for "biblical" reasons, while he's begging for public restraint over it. Hey, political revenge is where you find it...

If it's not in Texas law or state constitution, would courts grant that?

They may threaten but if they had any sense, they wouldn't go there. But Repukes have no sense so anything is possible.

This isn't a federal issue.

They're a bunch of GOP ass lickers.

Theoretically, the case should go to a District Judge where the representative resides. But this supreme court will do whatever. They're worse than SCROTUS.

Then I heard the FBI was going to arrest them. What happened with all that? Bullshit of course. As is this.

But I don't think the potential 5 seat pickup in Tejas will matter. As the economy continues to buckle and god knows what other calamities await us, those 5 seats, if they Repukes can even win them, may be a drop of water compared to the wave of resentment directed at the regime.

What does worry me is seating new House Dems in 2027. There will be free and fair elections in CA, NY and elsewhere. But will the regime call those elections "fraudulent" and pressure SCOTUS to reverse Powell v. McCormack, giving Jebus Johnson the ability to not seat them?

That would cause a shit storm of galactic proportions and might be the straw that drives some Blue states to seriously consider separation. And before you go on and on about "there's no legal bases for secession" explain to me how legal means anything in this dystopian version of America. Legal appears to be anything you can get away with.

Simple answer is what they have to sell to the American people is highly unpopular with the majority of
Americans. In Ohio the Congressional races are over before the 1st vote is cast.

“I don't want everybody to vote... As a matter of fact, our leverage in the election quite candidly goes up as the voting populace goes down.”
