Rep. Ralph Norman (R-SC) acknowledged that prices were up as a result of President Donald Trumps tariffs, yet emphasized that its for the good of the country in a Saturday appearance on Fox Report With Jon Scott.
Host Jon Scott asked the congressman, who recently announced his run for governor, to explain a Fox poll showing only a 55% approval rating for Trump on the economy.
I think a lot of people are seeing higher prices, said Norman. Our familys in the construction business, and we get a lot of our timber from Canada and other countries. Yes, its higher. Steel prices are up, but its for the good of the country. Should we expect high prices for a short time? Yes, he continued. But overall, we couldnt keep going the way we were going
Thats why this president is doing such a good job.
The Presidents sweeping tariffs took effect Thursday after months of delays and back-door deals. Most imports into the U.S. will now be subject to a baseline 10% duty, with the overall average effective tariff rate now sitting at more than 17%.

1. It won't cost you.
2. It's costing a tiny bit for a little time.
3. It's costing more but short time.
4. It costs a bunch and it will be a while but it's worth it. USA! USA! USA!
5. It's Obama's fault that the economy cratered.

(2,770 posts)... with those lying lips, Norman? Explain yourself; tell us in plain and simple terms how the bloody fuck this idiot president's tariffs are "for the good of the country". No. of course you can't, because they're not, and you're a filthy fucking liar. Innocent people are going to be severely impacted, and some will die, because you put Der Party before the people of this country. When I say, "innocent people", I do not include the simple-minded skidmarks that voted for you and that evil imbecile defiling the Oval Office; they deserve whatever fate befalls them. The rest of us do not.

(192,551 posts)The world market was just fine with how steel was made. US steel manufacturing was, Im sure, at the highest capacity it could be at given demand. Its not like they are just sitting around. Making new steel plants will take some time and
a lot of steel.
Housing especially new housing is another. So their chatter is that the Fed needs to lower the prime because people cant afford to buy a house. At the same time Trump slaps a 35% tariff on Canadian goods. Unless theres an exception for lumber that drives up the cost of construction. Again, US lumber doesnt have equipment and crews just sitting around. Expanding production, Trump is opening up our land to be wiped out, will require a big investment in heavy equipment made with a lot of
steel.

How is this for the good of the country? Demand details not just empty words. Even though a congress person represents a district his actions impact the entire country.

When you hear this you know it's about making the rich richer. How did our last austerity plans work out? Did they help you or any average person? Or did it just help out the filthy-rich elite oligarchs?
for the good of the country means expansive wealth for the filthy-rich. And NOTHING for the average American but hardship.

(387 posts)This seems to really be the crux of their argument. But have they truly bothered to explain why we couldn't keep going "the way we were going"? Is this part of a new push to make dangerous, dirty, loud jobs great again? Are there millions of Americans clamoring to go to work in the steel mill? Modern mills are far more efficient, automated, and use a lot of recycled steel to produce the same amount of steel as in days past with only a fraction of the labor, so the idea that America is ever going to get "back" to a time when steel mills are a path to the middle class for millions of people is mere fantasy.
There are good national security reasons to maintain a robust steel manufacturing ecology within the borders of the U.S., but preparing in advance for some as-yet-unpredicted and unpredictable catastrophe isn't what a free market is equipped to do. We live in a just-in-time (JIT) economy where the means of production have been tuned to produce the products we need as close to the time we need them as is possible. We all saw the impact of this during the pandemic where it turned out that the world was not chock full of warehouses with years of stockpiled goods just waiting to be distributed to people suddenly needing them. With only a few exceptions like grain in the ancient world, that has never been the way commerce really worked.
So what was this "way we were going"? "From the end of 2019 to the end of 2023, U.S. GDP grew by 8.2 percentnearly twice as fast as Canadas, three times as fast as the European Unions, and more than eight times as fast as the United Kingdoms." ( https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2024/06/us-economy-excellent/678630/ ) Is that the way about which he was speaking?
The entire MAGA movement is rooted in nostalgia for an America that was benefitting greatly from worldwide demand for its products in the wake of the destruction of almost all of the means production in Europe and Asia following two brutal world wars. They do not understand at all that the way we are going is not back to that--thank goodness. And if they trigger a new round of world wars in order to try and replicate the post-WWII economy they clamor to get back to, jobs in steel manufacturing will be the least of all of our concerns.
