Teamsters pour money into GOP, shifting away from Dems

Source: Politico

08/11/2025 10:58 AM EDT Updated: 08/11/2025 05:07 PM EDT

It wasn’t just 2024: the Teamsters General President Sean O’Brien is signaling a more permanent realignment by donating to battleground Republicans in the upcoming midterms.

For the second year in a row, the labor union’s political arm donated to the Republicans’ House campaign arm after nearly two decades of mostly backing Democrats.

The labor union’s D.R.I.V.E political action committee — Democrat, Republican, Independent Voter Education — gave the National Republican Congressional Committee $5,000 in the second quarter.

In addition to giving to the NRCC, Teamsters doled out a combined $62,000 in contributions to nearly two-dozen GOP congressional candidates, including in significant battleground districts:

I find Politico usually have negative articles concerning Democrats and favor shithole and the fucked up Republican Party.

While Other Voters Moved Away From the Democrats, Union Members Shifted Toward Harris in 2024

Many election analysts observe that Vice President Kamala Harris underperformed in 2024 compared with President Joe Biden in 2020 among key demographic groups, especially the working class. However, the Harris-Walz campaign managed to outperform Biden-Harris among union members. Joe Biden won union members handily in 2020, reversing a decline in union support for Democratic candidates that began in 2016, according to previous Center for American Progress Action Fund research. And, according to the VoteCast survey conducted for The Associated Press (AP) and Fox News, Harris appeared to widen Biden’s margin, with union voters preferring Harris over Donald Trump by 16 percentage points in 2024.
...
According to the 2024 VoteCast survey conducted for AP and Fox News—one of the most accurate voting polls currently available—57 percent of union members voted for Harris compared with 41 percent for Trump, a 16-point margin and an improvement over the 14-point margin Biden achieved among union members, according to 2020 VoteCast data. (see Figure 1) Additionally, the AP-Fox News survey estimates that, while only 9 percent of people who voted were union members in 2020, this increased to 11 percent in 2024, which may suggest union members turned out in greater numbers in 2024. These results are largely consistent with exit polls from the consortium, including NBC and CNN, showing that Harris still won union households in 2024, though by narrower margins compared with union voters alone. (The NBC-CNN exit poll reported data for voters from households with a union member, meaning its results for union households include many voters who are not themselves union members; AP-Fox News results for union households similarly show a narrower margin than for union members.)
...
Recent Democratic Party success with union members can be put in greater context using data from the Cooperative Election Study, a large academic survey, in addition to the AP-Fox News survey. As shown in Figure 2, in 2020, the margin for Democratic candidates among union members compared with nonunion members began to increase, reaching a 10-percentage-point higher vote share in 2024 . The margin was even higher in 2022, reaching a 12.3-percentage-point higher vote share among union members compared with nonunion members, as off-year elections tend to have lower turnout, meaning voter information and turnout campaigns could have greater impact. This margin was far smaller in the election of Trump in 2016—just 4.4 percentage points—and it stayed small in 2018. However, the trend reversed as the Biden-Harris campaign ran on a pro-worker platform, and, in fact, the support the Biden-Harris campaign received among union voters was one of the factors that secured his win in 2020, especially in some swing states.

There are 1.4 million Teamster members, so of course a group that large will have differing opinions. However, 59.6% for Trump was pretty high for a Republican.

That number was based on a "3rd party electronic poll" for an endorsement, where the number who actually participated in the poll is unknown (unless you can find a source with the data sets). That was not representing a percent of actual "votes".

Do you have a link to your statement?

The International Brotherhood of Teamsters has decided to withhold its endorsement in the November presidential election, but that hasn’t stopped its locals from bucking Teamsters leaders and making their voices heard.

And they are all in for Vice President Kamala Harris.

Sean O’Brien, president of the nearly 1.3 million member union, announced Sept. 18 that the Teamsters would not endorse Harris or Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump in the Nov. 5 election. Internal union polling showed that a majority of its members backed Trump over Harris, according to numerous news reports. O’Brien turned heads in July when he praised Trump in a speech at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee.

But Teamsters members in battleground states like Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Nevada took matters into their own hands, publicly backing Harris just hours after O’Brien’s announcement.

According to The Washington Post, at least eight regional Teamsters councils with active members in 14 states, and 10 locals have endorsed Harris.

Harris campaign: Councils representing one million Teamsters endorse Kamala Harris

Local Teamsters unions across the country, including in key battleground states of Michigan, Nevada, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, have rallied around Vice President Kamala Harris and Governor Tim Walz. Collectively, these unions represent one million Teamsters. These local Teamsters have committed to immediately begin knocking doors and engaging in other voter contact efforts across the b...

During a voting window from July 24-Sept. 15, rank-and-file Teamsters voted 59.6 percent for the union to endorse Trump, compared to 34 percent for Harris.

Following the Republican National Convention and Biden’s campaign exit, the Teamsters commissioned a national electronic poll of its 1.3 million members, overseen by an independent third party.

How many of the "1.3 million" actually PARTICIPATED in the "electronic poll"? Do you know?

What if you have a 10% poll response rate? Then you have "59.6%" of 130,000 who responded

If you can find the data sets from that "poll" that indicate how many actually responded, get back to me.

although there IS a subset of Teamsters members who have always been right-wingers.

The election for that position is not until 2026, but right after O'Brien did his bullshit of "non-endorsements" (but courting the GOP), he immediately got a challenge by the Teamsters VP for the President position when it comes time for that election next year.

Anyone really, truly surprised? When you have a loser party in charge promising all sorts of bullshit, you will have old allies jumping ship to what they think are better things. Sternly written letters and I’m really upset memes on Facebook won’t do it democrats. I do admire the Texas democrats for actually doing something in their best interest. They walked out and prevented a quorum. I know it won’t last forever, but they did something. Gavin Newsome is looking into redistricting California, fight fire with fire, along with New York…. If we want at least 2 more trump years, then congressional dems, just keep doing what you do… bring a cookie to a gun fight, but where are the town halls from EVERY DEMOCRAT? Do something out of the box. Go on Fox News, newsmax, Bill Maher, and any other right wing media and tell the truth about what the right is in for… they know, but need to hear it. Take a page out of right wing playbook…. Sometimes you have to get in the mud to find a lost gold ring…..
