Congresswoman Elise Stefanik met with boos, jeers during visit to Plattsburgh

Source: WPTZ-TV Burlington, VT/Plattsburgh, NY

Updated: 6:20 PM EDT Aug 18, 2025

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. — A group of protesters met North Country Rep. Elise Stefanik with boos and jeers during a ceremony in Plattsburgh to honor the late John Zurlo. Stefanik (R-NY), who represents the 21st congressional district and is a staunch supporter of President Donald Trump, was in attendance for a renaming ceremony at the Clinton County Government Center along with other local politicians including Assemblyman Billy Jones and Zurlo's family on Monday morning.

Zurlo died in December at the age of 86 and was considered a pillar of public service in the community, having served in various roles for more than 50 years. Jones remarked on Zurlo's character and the many years he dedicated to serving his community. "He was always, always on as a public servant. And to have this building named after him, I think, is a testimony to what it means to be a true officer. And John was certainly that," Jones said. When Zurlo died last year, Stefanik posted a tribute to him, calling him a "dear friend."

When it was her turn to speak at the renaming ceremony, protesters loudly booed, shouting things like "You sold us out." Protesters made up more than half of the crowd in attendance, many of them holding anti-Stefanik signs. Later, Stefanik addressed the media, saying she was disappointed that the event was politicized. "Today's event was about honoring John Zurlo," Stefanik said. "It is a disgusting disgrace that this is what the far left does. Rather than understanding that his family has been through a tremendous amount. It was about honoring his legacy."

Protesters booed Stefanik both times she went to the podium to speak. There was a call for Stefanik to hold a town hall that echoed through the crowd, even when local speakers took their turns at the podium. "Well, Elise has not shown up in our district for months and months," said protester Mavis Agnew. "She won't hold a town hall, she won't take questions.

Rather than serving as US Ambassador to the UN in shiny Upper East Side digs. She was robbed of her sinecure!

Stefanik is one of the worst representatives. She's right up there with MTG and Boebert. No Idea how she keeps getting elected. I own a place in her district. My neighbors seem more or less sane yet they still vote for her.

The guy running against Stefanik seems OK until people start asking him questions. When a local Public Radio reported asked him if he voted for Harris he waffled and refused to answer. I lost all respect for him right then and there. If a candidate can't say straight out 'of course I voted against Trump' they're not a legitimate Democrat.

Competent opposition.

I live in the district. I'll never vote for Stefanik or any republican and never have, for decades. Stefanik is in trouble up here. These Trump policies are doing actual damage to her voters. She is nowhere to be found. Great opportunity for someone who aspires to be a leader to step into the void. I have no idea who is running against Stefanik.

But one can't embrace Harris and expect to get elected. But it shouldn't be hard at all to say my conscience would never to allow me to vote for a morally loose felon so of course I chose the opposition.

One can't be against firearms and hunting and expect to get elected. The last candidate simply couldn't figure out how to message that. Something simple like, I absolutely support the right to bear arms, to hunt, to put food on the table and I look forward to working with community members to protect our right to bear arms while also protecting our right to remain safe from gun violence.

One can't expect to get elected without understanding the economy of milk.

One can't expect to get elected while embracing any of the social wedge issues.

One can't expect to get elected without advocating for border control of some kind. Lie if need be for crying out loud.

And one can't expect to get elected without pandering to law enforcement, corrections and border patrol which could be done in any number of indirect ways.

Point is, a well prepared candidate can, and will, beat Stefanik. But I suppose it's gotta begin with introducing yourself to your potential constituents.

Why would anyone vote for a Democrat LARPing as a Republican.

Rural and blue collar Americans respond to candidates like Bernie Sanders just fine. People respect and vote for Bernie even if they don't fully support all his progressive positions.

You believe all Democratic voters must have the same cultural referrants? That people who are worried about maintaining access to their lifelong hobbies and their livelihoods can't choose civil rights, justice, equality and fair representation while also hunting or farming? Who do you think booed Elise off the stage? How far do you think Plattsburgh is from Burlington? You don't think Bernie doesn't know how to talk milk and hunting?? Our state rep who just stepped down was a Democrat. He was also a correctional officer from dairy land. He knew how to communicate with that group. These people drive four wheelers to the convenience store, many others drive horse and buggies. You gotta know who you're representing before you can expect to represent them.

Tim Miller goes deep into Elise Stefanik getting booed at a local event multiple times as her neglect of constituents and loss of credibility back home gets called out. - 08/19/2025.

Though I liked this one the best since Tim Miller expressed his opinion, LOL. Is there any hope of finally getting rid of her? Everything Tim said about her ignoring constituents in favor of supporting TFG is certainly true. The husband of my friend who ran for local office (she's run twice when it's a Republican running unopposed) told me that on election night 2022 there was a local Republican meetup and Stefanik took the chance to be the first to endorse TFG for 2024! This took place in the northernmost New York county which is a great sign!

And she also supported the Texas State Senators who came here. Granted, we're a "blue state" mainly due to downstate (cities), but the northeast has been very clear in what they think of Stefanik. The UN Ambassador job didn't work out (the governor had already scheduled a replacement election for November), but I'm fine with whatever it takes to see the back of her. She's already proven that she's there to support TFG rather than constituents, over and over again.

in anticipation of getting confirmed for U.S. Ambassador and is undoubtedly pissed at being shoved aside.

But I think people keeping going back in time and pointing at Pataki and keep thinking that it could happen again. But that happened 30 years ago and things have changed!

17. And Republicans have changed!

Reagan, who was one of my least favorites, was in favor of immigration, was extremely tough on Russia and Gorbachev ("Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!&quot and along with the other living former presidents, Carter and Ford, supported President Clinton's 1994 Assault Weapons Ban.

These days, Republicans have to support TFG's illegal and fascist policies or they're out of a job in federal government. Back when I was a mod, one of the rules prohibited wishing harm or death to a public figure - and of course the posts we removed were about Cheney. These days, he's on our side, supported electing Kamala Harris! That's how much the so-called party of Lincoln - and Reagan - has changed!
