California Democrats prepare to pass their redistricting plan after Texas House approves new maps

California Democrats are taking up their proposed constitutional amendment to temporarily redraw their congressional maps, hours after Republicans in the Texas House passed new maps of their own.

After weeks of opposition and days of heated committee meetings and floor debates, lawmakers in both states are on track to pass their redistricting efforts Thursday.

In California, the state Assembly and Senate will consider a trio of bills that will allow for a special election to pass a constitutional amendment to replace the state’s existing congressional maps through 2030. From there, Democrats in the state must convince Californians to overturn the congressional maps drafted by the independent redistricting commission voters first empowered to draw the lines in 2010.

California Democrats have described their redistricting push as reaction to the Texas plan and President Donald Trump’s effort to create a more favorable 2026 midterm election map. The legislation includes a trigger clause that says the state will only move forward if other states – such as Texas – seek to implement their own mid-decade redistricting.

Cause if they're against Newsom they're for Trump.

Those christo-fascist pigs weaponized the The Breast Cancer Awareness Month pink ribbon campaign as well. Trashy RW kook women dynamiting everything just like a RW man would. Hateful people. I'm only guessing, but the RePigs get their dirty, smelly hands into everything. For jeeeesus, of course.

The League of Women Voters was a major backer of the original amendments that created and expanded the redistricting commission in the first place.

That was long before MAGA was a thing.

Common Cause was another key supporter of the commission and they are struggling to support the current move (with a number of board members resigning).

It has nothing to do with supporting Trump.

Lots of worked long and hard to take redistricting out of the hands of politicians.

Districts should be as compact as mathematically possible, let the chips fall where they may. There should be *NO* 'Democratic' or 'Republican' districts.

Being cordial and polite will not work anymore. That's my take for what it's worth and here is an article about the RW lunatics and their sabotaging psychopathic behavior concerning the Pink Ribbon campaign:

I with though that there was something in the Constitution that would address gerrymandering in some way so as to prevent it.

Had a ton of safe guards.

But Shelby V Holder and the SCOTUS didn't matter to enough people in 2016. So here we are.

We are going to be burdened in this fight by lambs in our midst.

We have to push them to the back and tell them to stay out of our way.

Seriously. What they would have done during slavery? Covered their eyes or looked away and told abolitionists to stop being Big Meanies.

The voting rights act addresses how districts should be drawn so that minorities are not legislated out of having their own representation. There are surely some other DU members here who can explain this better than what I have posted here. Explain away, fellow DU members!

That’s what I want to know.
If we are going to go scorched earth in California, I expect the repukes to counter in other states. So this is likely going to escalate considering what’s at stake. Who’s done the math to show the possible end state?
