Taking ICE to the skies: Noem wants a whole fleet of DHS owned planes to fly deportees back to their home countries

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem wants planes that Immigration and Customs and Enforcement can use to fly immigrants to their home countries in order to help achieve the Trump administrations deportation quota, according to a report.
The agency currently uses charter and commercial planes to transport immigrants from the United States. Noem is pushing to purchase planes for ICE to own and operate, sources told NBC News. DHS told The Independent it could not confirm this report.
Equipped with its own planes, ICE would potentially be able to deport twice as many people each month, former officials told the outlet.
Historically, ICE has chartered eight to 14 planes at a time for deportation flights, which amounted to flying roughly 15,000 deportees per month from the U.S., Jason Houser, ICEs chief of staff from 2022 to 2023, told the outlet.

Will she dress up as a pilot and pretend to fly the plane?

(126,737 posts)There are a lot of used ones belonging to airlines in storage at Marana, AZ, but most of those haven't been flown in years and some don't have engines. It would take months and months and a lot of money to make them usable. Maybe the Air Force has some ancient C-130s or even DC-3s but who cares if they are actually safe? ICE Barbie can't just snap her expensively-manicured fingers and have dozens of airplanes delivered. Also, it's stupid to buy airplanes outright when they can be leased or chartered because if you own them you're responsible for all the maintenance, upkeep and storage even when you're not using them.

(4,900 posts)Spirit airlines owns a fleet of Airbus A-320s and is about to go belly up.
In walks an operator for the entire fleet (DHS) , stockholders get paid off, and Noam has her fleet of planes.
The U.S. government turned down their request to merge with Jet Blue. That basically set them up for limited options. Today, Spirit has 141 aircraft, including 35 older aircraft parked, and 30 newer aircraft less than 2 years old in the mix. They could pump out 40 or 50 airplanes to DHS, and still fly most of their present routes.

(126,737 posts)That could be a source, though I'm not sure the A320 is the best airplane for DHS' purposes unless they gut the interiors to make them as uncomfortable as possible for the deportees.

(1,886 posts)imprisoned in fucking El Salvador or in active warzones in Sudan, Rwanda, or any number of random-ass "shithole countries" (to use Trump's own words) they have no ties to whatsoever.
This regime hasn't explained that shit at ALL, and yet they keep saying they're sending people "home" or "back where they came." It's such a steaming crock of shit.
This country has become the real shithole.
