Democratic Sen. Ruben Gallego seeks to block Ashli Babbitt from military funeral honors

Sen. Ruben Gallego, Democrat of Arizona, will seek to block the Pentagon from offering full military funeral honors to Ashli Babbitt, a member of the crowd that rioted at the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.
Gallego, who has criticized the Pentagon for agreeing recently to provide Babbitt with an honorary military funeral, will attempt to pass legislation this week to prevent the honor from being conferred. He told CBS News, his legislation "comes from a sense of patriotism, you know, as someone who served this country, as someone who unfortunately buried a lot of Marines with full military honors."
"The idea that they're giving this to a person who actively tried to overthrow the government, who was violent in nature, who knowingly was entering a restrictive zone while we were trying to conduct the safe passage of democracy, and the idea that they're just going to give this without a fight, it's just not going to happen," Gallego said.
He said he's noticed that top officials, the secretary of the Air Force, defense secretary, the vice president and president have "never even said this," and "they just kind of have been trying to sneak this in under in the dark." "And I'm not gonna let that happen," Gallego said. "I'm gonna put people on the record to make sure that we know who stood with your traitor, Ashli Babbitt."

(2,996 posts)But after seeing the videos of what these traitors -- that's a word that should sting more than any street epithet I could use -- these traitors were doing to the police, to the building, and to the Country and its Constitution, I favored a more ritualistic execution of them, in groups, in a public place, until the rotting bodies of the whole sour crop of them were hanging from gallows on public display.
But that's just me.
Ms Ashlee deserves nothing but the execution that was meted out to her the day she breached the defensive barricade inside the Capitol Building and attempted to harm or kill Members of the United States Congress. Yes, I said "kill" because that was exactly what she was knowingly attempting to do.
Thank you, Senator Gallego, for your service, and for your efforts to prevent a traitor from being canonized a saint by our demented Government, its sick and withering away "President" and its alcoholic, sexist, naziphile Sec'y of -- War? War? Really? Give me, please, a break, you moron.
But thanks, again, Senator, for being an activist senator and patriot.

(3,524 posts)It was a police officer defending the Capitol and the members of Congress within. Had the shot merely stopped her forward progress without killing her, he would have been fine with that outcome. He was not trying to kill anyone.
OK, I know you are just venting here, but the restraint showed that day was necessary. i can imagine similar words coming from the other side, so let's just not go there.

(2,996 posts)As a police officer stopping someone who seemed to be leading -- and was in fact attempting to lead -- a murderous mob into the hallowed hall of Congress wherein our Representatives lay in fear, wearing gas masks and calling their families with final goodbyes, he shot her dead and prevented her entry. He put her down, slowing the progress of the raging mob that would have followed her in in close order had they been able.
No police officer worth his salt would have done anything else. He was there protecting the legislators and their staffs. She was a clear and present danger to them. Putting her down gave temporary pause to the vicious traitors waiting to crowd in after her, buying time for the Representatives to be evacuated. To do anything less would have lacked that temporary deterrence and may well have led to a worse kind of bloodshed in which our elected Representatives were the victims.
Ms Babbitt received the punishment her warranted by her actions.

(3,524 posts)to do according to protocol. However, I'm sure that defense, not punishment, was his priority.
The rest of your description of public executions is the kind of thing I can imagine the other side suggesting, and it isn't a possibility we want to even plant in their minds.

(2,996 posts)First, police officers and Secret Service are trained in such circumstances to shor for the head. Regardless, the Babbitt doubtless didn't present an easy target to shoot for the legs or arms or any other body part. She almost certainly -- I think -- did not expect to be risking her life. But that was not an issue to the lawman who shot her. His duty was to protect the people in his charge. He shot to kill. It is possibly the kind of killing act that has him staying up nights because of remorse. But he did his duty.
Second, mass executions are not a pretty thing to contemplate and an even less pretty thing to see. But I can't help thinking about what kindness did for America when President Johnson laid a velvet hand on the traitors, the very men who sought to destroy America and to maintain their ante bellum status made rich by the buying, selling and raping of black people, whipping them unconscious for trivial things, selling babies away from their mothers, in order to make money. As a result of the soft treatment of these awful men, the South, in effect, rose again and today the spawn of those traitors are the very people who are seeking to destroy America -- again. Had Lincoln not been assassinated, their fate would likely have been less soft. And, yes, I doubt Lincoln would have ordered mass executions -- but he would have left it up to the courts to decide what men guilty of the worst forms of treason should suffer for their crimes. Johnson showed his drunken loyalties to the so-called "Lost Cause," and so black people were left only "technically" better off than they were as slaves.
I don't think the good people of America would tolerate what I suggested. Mass executions might be too much for them to accept. But, certainly, the traitors of January 6th would have been subjected to the penalties provided by law, penalties that would have included lengthy, perhaps lifetime prison sentences. And I suppose that spectacle would have been sufficient to make the point that Democracy is so important that any attempt to destroy it merits contempt and severe punishment.
Sorry for the ramble. And I do understand your reasoning. I pretty much agree with your attitude and feelings in the matter. But I am angry and grow angrier by the day at the morons on the Right who want to canonize people like Babbitt as heroes when all of them need to be remembered as the worst kind of traitors.
MadameButterfly
(3,524 posts)what the policeman had to do. And Babbit was a raving lunatic not deserving of being lionized. The wrongful death award is outrageous.
Lincoln's second inaugural expressed a tone of forgiveness, but yes, Johnson was a disaster. Nevertheless, a Union congress gave us Reconstruction and Blacks were elected to office and did benefit for a while. That changed with the Tilman/Hayes election and by then a Democratic majority congress caused Federal troops to be removed from the South. The result was skulduggery that reminds one a great deal of what Republicans are like today.
I think we did just fine with the Jan. 6 traitors until Trump used the pardon. I do hope that when we turn this all around that EVERYONE culpable gets prosecuted. Everyone who followed illegal orders from top to bottom. That means Marco Rubio and the guys who set the explosives on the Venezuelan boat. Every fake elector. Supreme Court justices who gave a president immunity. ICE agents arresting people for showing up for their immigration hearings, and deporting them to foreign prisons. FOX for misinformation. All of them. And there will be more to answer for before this is all over.

We have some good up & coming pols in AZ. Our governor, AG, and Sec of State are working near miracles despite a ridiculously stupid MAGA infused legislature. We have some really promising fighters heading into congressional races. Keep an eye on AZ DEMs. Maybe even send them some coin if/when you can, as their GOP opposition is too well funded from national PACs.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
