'Horrific': Dems livid as House passes bill to 'supercharge' Trump's anti-migrant agenda

Eleven Democrats voted with Republicans in the US House of Representatives on Thursday to advance the so-called Stop Illegal Entry Act, which critics have condemned as dangerously overbroad as well as dehumanizing and horrific.
The final vote was 226-197. The 11 Democrats who joined all GOP members present in backing the bill were Reps. Henry Cuellar (Texas), Don Davis (NC), Laura Gillen (NY), Jared Golden (Maine), Vicente Gonzalez (Texas), Adam Gray (Calif.), Kristen McDonald Rivet (Mich.), Frank Mrvan (Ind.), Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (Wash.), Tom Suozzi (NY), and Gabe Vasquez (NM).
Introduced by Congresswoman Stephanie Bice (R-Okla.) and Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), HR 3486 would increase sentences for undocumented immigrants who repeatedly enter the United States illegally or enter the country and then commit a felony. The bill still needs Senate approval to reach the desk of Republican President Donald Trump, who supports it.
After Thursdays vote, Mike Zamore, the ACLUs national director of policy and government affairs, warned that HR 3486 would supercharge President Trumps reckless deportation drive, which is already damaging our economy and destabilizing communities.

(6,967 posts)They at least have a chance to win re-election as a Democrat (though I hope they all will be primaried). Switching to the Republican party would be political suicide for them. They would all get primaried by super MAGA types and would be at least 99% certain to lose the primary.

(3,437 posts)Was my representative until this year. Why? Because the Reichwing bastards in Raleigh redid all the districts to eliminate a bunch of Democrats. Daviss old district was fairly blue. As a result of the gerrymandering, his new district has a PVI of R+1. He has to be a bit more careful about charges issues as a result.
Davis (not that this should matter, but it does) is Black, and a decent guy. Hes nothing like Byron Donalds or (In)Justice Clarence Uncle Slappy Thomas.
I dont like the vote, but I understand it. Id rather have him still in Congress because he voted differently to keep his seat, than see a Repuke in it who wont vote for anything I believe in. Perfect is the enemy of the good.

This is very disturbing.

(159,749 posts)Not really. The media is amplifying the 45 court "wins" (which are still mostly at the SCOTUS level and are only in effect "until the lower courts are done their cases" ). But the vast majority of district and appellate court rulings have been AGAINST 45.
The problem is this SCOTUS mess, which is being done through what they have dubbed the "shadow docket", where rather than allowing the lower courts' rulings stand (putting holds on these illegal actions) until the cases are all fleshed out, they have overruled those lower courts to let the damage continue while the court cases play out.

(159,749 posts)and that is just recently... and I know because I am posting as many news stories about the many lawsuits and the court rulings as I can find! There have to be upwards of 300 lawsuits that have been filed so far (and many appeals).
