Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro (D) on Thursday called out President Donald Trump for blaming Charlie Kirks killing on the rhetoric of the radical left, noting that his response missed the mark.
In an interview with ABC News Live, Shapiro said Trump should have spoken out against political violence coming from all sides.
I think it is dangerous when the president cherry-picks which political violence hes going to condemn and which hes going to allow to just simply pass. I think we need to be universal in condemning all political violence, Shapiro said. The president missed the mark [Wednesday] night in his Oval Office address.
In a video message posted by the White House in the wake of Kirks deadly shooting during an event on a college campus in Utah, Trump pointed a finger at the radical left for the right-wing political activists killing, even though officials have yet to identify a motive behind his killing.

I am in PA and was at a dentist appointment yesterday afternoon and the multistory medical building had the flag half-staff yesterday - especially here because the state had one of the 9/11 crash sites (Shanksville, PA with Flight 93).

(611 posts)There was a second proclamation specific to 9/11. I was quite angry at first because I had only seen the one about Kirk (I'm not terribly far from Shanksville) but not the second.
In retrospect, separating them into two makes sense. However, presidential proclamation or no, I am unhappy with Kirk being so honored.

(159,829 posts)It seems like an "add-on" to what was already planned anyway, which as you know, has been happening every year for the past 24 years!
We are in the unfortunate position of being a "purple state" so there are MAGat loons in the state and he is trying to "govern" for the "whole state" (and thankfully blew out the biggest loon of them all here - Doug Mastriano - out by 15%!!).

(611 posts)that was going to be my next question. I wasnt sure what a presidential proclamation meant in terms of obligation.

(159,829 posts)to recognize an event (like an anniversary, death, etc) or someone/some organization (in honor, etc).
When it comes to its use for flying the flag - it really only applies to federal buildings (and military vessels) and is optional for everyone else, although governors can also direct for it to apply within their states -normally for state buildings (and they usually do go ahead and do that). There is a specific "flag code" that is followed.
You might recall when some GOP loons, including the current President, who refused to keep the flag at half-staff when President Biden had issued a proclamation honoring the late Jimmy Carter after he passed and asked that flags be kept at half-staff for 30 days (which they were on federal property).

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) U.S. flags at President-elect Donald Trump s private Mar-a-Lago club are back to flying at full height.
Flags are supposed to fly at half-staff through the end of January out of respect for former President Jimmy Carter, who died on Dec. 29. A large flag on Trumps property in Palm Beach was initially lowered to half-staff according to protocol but has since been raised in the days after Carter was buried Thursday in his hometown of Plains, Georgia.
Both President Joe Biden, a Democrat, and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, a Republican, directed that U.S. flags be flown at half-staff for 30 days from the date of Carters death or through Jan. 28.

(38,573 posts)Most Dem leaders already are condemning political violence of any kind, as we have seen in the last 2 days. However the Repuke leaders were blaming the murder of Charlie Kirk on Democrats without any proof what-so-ever. Chump was just fanning the flames. He's itching for a reason to declare martial law and the Repukes act like they're hoping it will happen.
Martial law (with a suspension of Constitutional liberties) would benefit NOBODY. Don't they realize that?
