Italian workers' strike in solidarity with Gaza brings disruptions across the country
Source: Associated Press
ROME (AP) Thousands of protesters and strikers calling for solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza took to the streets in Italy on Monday, with some storming Milans central train station and clashing violently with police.
Italys grassroots unions, which represent hundreds of thousands of people ranging from schoolteachers to metalworkers, called for a 24-hour general strike in both public and private sectors, including public transportation, trains, schools and ports.
The strike caused disruptions across the country, with long delays for national trains and limited public transport in major cities, including Rome.

Heavy fighting between protesters and police at Milan Central Station and spilling into surrounding streets. Clashes also took place in Rome, where 20,000 students and workers blocked Termini Station. More than 50,000 protesters in Bologna. Protesters cleared from highway with tear gas and hoses in Bologna.

(3,775 posts)Getting harder and harder to defend the indefensible I guess. Good!
And bravo to all the protesters. Italians are showing us what solidarity and people power look like.
My translation
Hundreds of thousands of people marched in 80 cities. The protest of unions, students, and ordinary citizens asking for a ceasefire in Palestine and standing against military, political, and economic collaboration with the Israeli government took place and was for the most part peaceful.
The exceptions were a few violent groups that attacked Milan Central Station, a fact that has been turned into fodder for political arguments on the part of the majority parties.
Among the more positive marches was that in Rome, with over 50,000 present: police authorized a deviation of the march onto the tangenziale east (a beltway/highway), which was partially blocked for a short time.
Highways and beltways were also occupied in Bologna and Pisa, and the ports of Genoa, Livorno, and Marghera (Venice) were also blocked.

(3,775 posts)She is making hay about the vandalism of a few while ignoring the peaceful protest of hundreds of thousands and not condemning Israel's violence and war crimes. She's fine with a genocide but draws the line at property damage. Typical right-wing hypocrite.
