Unease grows at the Justice Department as Trump's threats get even more blunt

Source: NPR

September 22, 2025 4:24 PM ET

President Trump is openly directing the Justice Department to go after his political adversaries, adding to a sense of unease inside the department about job security and ethical obligations. Even in an era of nonstop social media posts, Trump's weekend update stopped many government attorneys in their tracks. The president said he wanted to see justice served.

"We can't delay any longer, it's killing our reputation and credibility," he wrote. What Trump said couldn't wait are criminal investigations of his most prominent critics: former FBI Director Jim Comey, New York Attorney General Letitia James, and California Democratic Sen. Adam Schiff. His post emerged only hours after the top federal prosecutor in northern Virginia left his job under pressure. Erik Siebert had worked closely with Trump's top DOJ leaders this year, but he concluded he could not seek criminal charges the president wanted against James.

Now Lindsey Halligan, who had been serving as a special assistant to the president, was sworn in Monday as U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, though she has no prosecutorial experience. Most recently, she's been helping Trump remove what he calls "improper ideology" from the Smithsonian museums.

"This attorney general sent a memo on Day 1 that made it clear that Justice Department lawyers were the president's lawyers, and we are now seeing how that's playing out and how dangerous it is — how it disintegrates the rule of law," Stacey Young, a former DOJ attorney who now leads a group called Justice Connection that helps Justice Department workers, said of Attorney General Pam Bondi.

In his sick mind, he really thinks all of these people are criminals, or should at least be treated as criminals.

He probably assumes the DOJ is there to serve him and punish anyone that goes against him in thought or deed.

He truly believes he is special and entitled to do as he pleases.

He thinks he is the most wonderful person in the world and people are idiots not
to understand that. It is so unfair that others do not recognize his brilliance
and must be punished and silenced.

The laws do not apply to him because he is special. The laws are only for the
rest of us who are all suckers and losers. And just props in the movie in his head.
The movie where he is the only star of the show. The rest of us are just
disposable props.

Yes this man is the most powerful man in the world.
The leader of the free world.
And has power over life and death for most of the planet.
Truly terrifying.

they really do believe that they are never going to die. Why? Because they believe that the world can't get along without them, so they will be the first person in the history of mankind not to die.

And that they cannot take it with them.

They do however fantasize that in the future books and movies with laud and praise
them as the most exceptional beings who ever lived.

What about blue slip rule in Senate - can’t 2 Senators from VA put a hold on her nomination?

and is replacing someone who was "Acting" while being the nominee but was on a hold/in the queue, and left before any confirmation hearing/vote.

There are a bunch of holdover U.S. Attorneys and many "Actings" and/or "interims" due to Democrats blocking them.

Wikipedia has a list and status - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Attorney#List_of_current_U.S._attorneys'_offices

Quick count has 23 (out of 93) who were actually confirmed so far and the rest are either holdovers (no replacements nominated yet), "Actings", "Interims", or some other wild illegal status (like Alina Habba). I believe the "legal Interims" are those whose Acting status may have expired and the judges in that district voted to retain them.

And the Blue Slips are pretty much relegated to the judicial nominees (which are "for life" ).

They had their shot at MFer and then went about it in the most lackadaisical manner possible.

ALL of the Federal Gubmint is being absolutely trashed, and the Trumpists have 3 more years, min, to cement the corruption and destruction in place. Not a fucking thing anyone can do about it.

Show trials are coming.

A president thundered, “Pursue!”
His critics — a prominent few.
With justice upended,
Careers have been ended,
And rule of law’s straining right through.

The law took a sinister bend,
When justice was forced to pretend.
With orders from high,
Truth started to die,
And fear was the means to the end.

"Lock ’em all up!" came the tweet,
As Trump called for justice on repeat.
With lawyers aghast,
He just hired a cast
Who think legal training’s a cheat.

DOJ has lost all credibility with the courts. Any presumption DOJ previously enjoyed is long gone.

I would expect a rash of dismissals.
