Nightmare bacteria' cases are increasing in the US

Source: AP

NEW YORK (AP) — Infection rates from drug-resistant “nightmare bacteria” rose almost 70% between 2019 and 2023, according to a new report from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention scientists.

Bacteria that are difficult to treat due to the so-called NDM gene primarily drove the increase, CDC researchers wrote in an article published Monday in the Annals of Internal Medicine. Only two antibiotics work against those infections, and the drugs are expensive and must be administered through an IV, researchers said.

Bacteria with the gene were once considered exotic, linked to a small number of patients who received medical care overseas. Though the numbers are still small, the rate of U.S. cases jumped more than fivefold in recent years, the researchers reported.

“The rise of NDMs in the U.S. is a grave danger and very worrisome,” said David Weiss, an Emory University infectious diseases researcher, in an email.

Everybody stop asking your medical provider for antibiotics for every little sniffle, okay? Aristus 23 hrs ago #8

The NDM (New Delhi Metallo-β-Lactamase) gene is a bacterial gene responsible for producing the NDM-1 enzyme, which confers resistance to nearly all β-lactam antibiotics, including carbapenems, by breaking them down with zinc.

The gene is found on mobile genetic elements called plasmids, which allows it to spread rapidly among different bacteria, making it a significant global public health concern. Infections caused by NDM-producing bacteria are difficult to treat, with limited antibiotic options and a focus on infection control to prevent further spread...

Bacteria that produce carbapenemases are often referred to in the news media as "superbugs".

NDM-1 bacteria symptoms:

Fatigue.
Shock (if the bacteria enters the bloodstream)
Fever.
Urinary infections.
Other symptoms specific to each illness.

NDM is not a single disease, it is a group of disorders, which share similar symptoms.
The four main types are commonly known as Becker myotonia congenita, Thomsen myotonia congenita, paramyotonia congenita (Eulenburg) or dyskalaemic periodic paralysis.

With RFK Jr in charge, treatable knowns are ignored, but untreatable knowns are also ignored.

I'm not hearing the disease being taken lightly in the replies above, but rather sarcasm about the quacks and charlatans in charge.

Not only are a greater percentage of Americans no longer getting traditional vaccines for infectious dieses and the rated of infections are growing, but now we have this collection of infections under NDM (New Delhi Metallo-β-Lactamase).
While not widespread in the US...yet, without the CDC taking control, the infection could spread.

Very Complex.

The vast majority of your respiratory infections are, or will be, viral in nature. Take the symptomatic treatment they prescribe, along with rest and plenty of water, and stop demanding antibiotics.

In some developing countries they're handed out like candy, OTC. But we're not helping either.
