John Thune praises tariffs as he admits farmers have 'big harvest' with 'no place to go'

Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) praised President Donald Trump's tariffs even as he admitted that farmers in his state had a "big harvest" with "no place to go." During a Sunday interview on Meet the Press, host Kristen Welker told Thune that Trump had recently stated he would assist farmers hurt by the tariff policy.

"Why should American taxpayers bail out farmers who are hurting because of the president's tariff policies?" Welker wondered.

"Well, look, I think that the farmers, and I represent a lot of them, and they want nothing more than open markets," Thune replied. "There are markets right now that aren't open to some of our commodities." "As a consequence of that, we've got a big harvest coming in here in South Dakota, corn and soybeans, and no place to go with it," he continued. "So what the President has said is, I'm going to support and I'm going to help our farmers." "We're looking at potential solutions to make sure that we can help support farmers until some of those markets come back."

Thune, however, said he supported Trump using tariffs to achieve "reciprocity with countries that have been taking advantage of us for a long time." "I think a lot of our farmers support that," the senator claimed. "But at the end of the day, our farmers are probably going to need some financial assistance this year."

by cutting off markets that pay the revenue we cut AND raised which are taking away the market so we obviously have to bail them out.

The farmers will never recover from this. Might as well grow weed and opium poppies for the masses after those bastards get done with what's left of this place.

They're no different than most corporations. The ones that are left are also predators. The giant plots of land they've accumulated over the years came to them on the cheap at the cost of their neighbors livelihoods. Co-ops, which used to protect small family farms by basically "unionizing" them and giving groups of farmers a single voice were wiped out in the 80's. Usually the biggest landowner of those Co-op's scooped up the others as the smaller ones went bankrupt. You need HUGE chunks of land to survive a market that has surpluses so large anymore the commodities they produce would sell for a penny a ton without gov't subsidies. Those subsides didn't kick in until the little red barns were gone and multi-millionaires replaced them. Its repuke piss on the canopy economics at it's finest.

Now the reasons rural communities vote repuke are lack of such subsidies for their education, poverty and plain old fashioned bigotry. They need to blame someone for their misery

Multi millionaire agribusiness elites and corporations will be padding their pockets with our taxpayer funded bailout cash, just like Wall Street in 2007.

Fucking Tarif's and these economic policies are pricing me out of groceries, insurance, utilities etc. Where's my bailout you pigs.

How many years will this be the case?
If they don't plant next year, there won't be any potential for a bountiful harvest, and perhaps no bail out.
This is a sucker deal for them. Trump takes their lively hood away, and then pays them to feel good about it.

Q: "Why should American taxpayers bail out farmers…?

Thune: “(Farmers) want nothing more than open markets…(Trump) has said… ‘I'm going to support and I'm going to help our farmers’… We're looking at potential solutions…”

But the question was why should the rest of America PAY FOR IT???
Why “socialize” (that word again!) the losses? For YOUR policy?
