WASHINGTON (AP) An experimental medication made from marijuana successfully reduced back pain in a new study, offering further support for the drugs potential in treating one of the most common forms of chronic pain.
The 800-patient study by a German drugmaker is the latest evidence of the therapeutic properties of cannabis, which remains illegal under U.S. federal law even as most states have made it available for medical or recreational use.
Health officials in Canada and Europe have previously approved a pharmaceutical-grade form of cannabis for several types of pain, including nerve pain due to multiple sclerosis. In the U.S., the Food and Drug Administration has approved a drug containing CBD one of the many non-intoxicating chemicals found in cannabis to treat rare seizures in children with epilepsy.
Unlike that drug, known as Epidiolex, the new cannabis formula from drugmaker Vertanical contains THC, the active ingredient in marijuana that gets users high. But levels of the chemical are very low, essentially a microdose compared to whats available in gummies, chocolate bars and other products sold at marijuana dispensaries in the U.S. The company said patients in the trial didnt show any signs of drug abuse, dependence or withdrawal.

(9,153 posts)They will love anything that will keep us working. They will try to figure out a way to downplay the fact that it is made from cannabis, but they love medical advances that keep us in the trenches.
My question is, as always, is the motivation for making this the ability to help control pain, or what I was saying, in that they just want to make sure we will work ourselves to death before we realize it?
(This is a somewhat rhetorical question...)

(14 posts)From a medical perspective isolating THC and CBD for specific uses rather than relying on the plant itself. Im told thats already working well in the context of chemotherapy, to relieve the nausea associated with the treatment.

(7,342 posts)Sound sleep for more than an hour or two at a time is impossible. I am up 2-4 times doing PT exercises just to be able to lie back down. Can't tolerate the normal pain pills doctors reluctantly give.
Tried CBD oil and it isn't much help. Finally tried cannabis gummies. Not a big fan of THC but it did allow some sleep. Further experiments with formulas and levels brought progress and the occasional decent night's sleep. But only used when pain and exhaustion made me wish for death.
Tried different gummies with different formulas. Finally found a gummy that really helps without a list of side affects. The dosage is as follows:
each gummy:
10MG of CBG (a cannabis component I had not read about until I tried these & did some research)
10MG of CBD
1MG of THC
and...............50MG of Theanine
Researching the CBG component showed me it is a good pain reliever, with the usual pain management dosage being 60MG for bad pain. Being sensitive to other medicine, I started slow, only one gummy, and gradually increased dosage every few days, noting how I felt and any side effects. Found that only 3 of these lil gems really helps pretty bad pain (my pain tolerance is WAY above normal as I've had so much for so long, it takes me barely able to walk or sleep for a few days before I try any medicine)
Sleep is now possible, and I take at least one of these fairly regularly. Unlike the higher THC items, these do not make my mouth/throat so dry that I have to sip water all night, which definitely interferes with sleep.
Life is tolerable, again, even pleasant some days and I can get some household/yard chores done if I pace myself.

(6,625 posts)although the lower lumbar and S areas are what give me the most pain. I also have fibromyalgia, and my inflammation levels often kick me into lupus flares. I'm in KS, where smiling is looked upon as "what have you done you shouldn't have done?!" I swear, "Illegal Smile" was written about this place! But gods, how I'd love to try what you've found. I've run over to MO for some stuff, which is legal there, but what I found helped for a few weeks but like most meds, my body adapted and it didn't do as well over the long haul. I've been stuck doing pain pills (hydrocodone) for so long, for any kind of relief. But you know how tolerance to those build up. Add to that I worry they're going to end up taking them off the market or make them harder to get as the purists and christianists get wound up even more. Is what you've found offered online, or only through a physical store? I'd pushed the edges for a few day of almost normal behavior of cleaning house again... not to mention sitting on the floor and playing with my cats!

(7,342 posts)Feel for you, especially being in KS. Originally from MO myself, with family still in KS, I TOTALLY get the issues!
So sorry to hear about what you are dealing with. All I can offer is to work to elect better legislators who understand that pain is not required. Or, get thee to MO for a buy. I realize the trip might be impossible, depending on what part of KS you are in. It's a pretty good sized state.
The brand is Wana and there are several products with different formulas. Maybe someone you trust travels east from time to time and could bring you some? Would you be in legal danger just having it in the house in KS?
Years ago, I worked with a woman from China, born to a French father/Chinese mother. Highly educated, very
cosmopolitan and worldly. She worked for the French Ambassador in Peking after the war, married an American officer. A year prior to meeting him, she was engaged to a GI from Kansas. Knowing I am from western MO with family in KS, she asked me what her life would have been like if she had married the man from KS. I was honest and told her it would have been SHORT because she would likely have thrown herself down a well after two years. Then I detailed what her life would have been like.
She listened, wide eyed. When I was done telling her about life there back in the 40s and on, she said, "I need to make my husband a very special dinner to thank him for saving me from that!"
I TRULY hope you find some way to get reliable relief. Yes, I know about the problem of meds losing effectiveness over time. That is why I have to be nearly suicidal before giving in and taking something. The pain and lack of sleep over the years has taken a toll on my mental abilities along with the physical limitations. Yes, I understand and wish you solid help.
edited to change 'sophisticated' to the more accurate 'cosmopolitan'

(6,625 posts)but this summer went by too fast, I guess... that, and money was low. Dispensary prices here are pretty high, too. Still... I was so blown away walking into a "legal" head shop the first time I nearly dropped my teeth! (LOL) The medicated cream I found was great until it ran out, and then the dispensary ran out, and I could never find it again. A substitute didn't work at all.
All I can say about KS and moving back here to help out family decades ago is it got me out of Texas before it became equal to FL. I long to move to a blue PNW state, but age and lack of money isn't going to allow that, I'm afraid. Thanks for the understanding, Attila... I think if we could get out of the constant state of PTSD with the magas and trump, it might help a bit by decreasing the stress. But I don't see that happening anytime soon, either.

(12,765 posts)And neck. A lot of pain. He just started getting specialized shots in his neck called Medial Branch Blocks and if it works for the pain they will do a Radiofrequency Neurotomy where they put heat on the nerves to deaden them that cause the pain.
He went to a special pain doctor to hear about this.
He smokes pot to help but hates pain pills so doesn't use them often.
So far the first shots they gave him have been working. He said he can move his neck around without pain for first time in years.
