The gunman who killed at least four worshippers, wounded eight and was shot to death by police on Sunday at a Mormon church in Grand Blanc Township, Michigan, had a sign emblazoned with the last name of Donald Trump outside his house, public records show.
The president responded to the church shooting on Sunday by saying there is still a lot to learn about the deceased suspect, identified as 40-year-old Thomas Jacob Sanford. This appears to be yet another targeted attack on Christians in the United States of America, Trump said in a post on his Truth Social platform.
Trumps comments were notably calm and measured compared with his remarks following the killing of the rightwing activist Charlie Kirk in Utah 18 days earlier, when the president rushed to blame the radical left for the murder and was echoed by his allies. A suspect is in custody in connection with that shooting and faces charges that carry the death penalty.
Images on Google Maps taken in June show that Sanford had a blue sign with Trumps last name attached to a shed on the side of his house in Burton, Michigan, about a 15-minute drive from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints authorities say he targeted Sunday morning.

(11,916 posts)Who knows. Maybe he did intentionally put it above a STOP sign, but that doesn't make sense to me. I can't imagine anyone truly opposed to Trump having anything resembling a Trump Vance campaign sign anywhere near them.
In any case, I seriously doubt it had anything to do with politics. The guy clearly had a problem with Mormons according to the NYTimes. And his anger stemmed not from any political ideology, but from a bad breakup with a Mormon woman years before. Things don't get more personal than that.

Peter Tersigni, who lives in Michigan, said he had known Mr. Sanford since preschool and called him his best friend. A four-year stint in the Marine Corps, including time in Iraq, changed his friend from the former class clown into a more serious person, Mr. Tersigni said.
But his time living in Utah and heavy use of methamphetamine appeared to change him more. There, he fell in love with a woman who was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and the relationship ended painfully, his friend said.
Mentally he was in rough shape when he returned to Michigan, Mr. Tersigni said.
From then on, Mr. Sanford had a problem with members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and wasnt shy about sharing it, Mr. Tersigni and his twin brother, Francis Tersigni, recounted in separate interviews on Monday.
He got this whole fascination with Mormons, and they are the Antichrist, and they are going to take over the world, Francis Tersigni said. It even came up at Peter Tersignis wedding, his brother recalled. All he could talk about was Mormons, he said. I was like, dude, nobody wants to hear about this stuff.

As recently as last week, Kris Johns, a candidate for the City Council in Burton, Mich., knocked on Mr. Sanfords door while canvassing and, within a few minutes, found himself listening to a diatribe about Mr. Sanfords ex-girlfriend, the church and its demands that he remove his tattoos to become a member.
Mr. Johns remembers Mr. Sanford saying repeatedly, Mormons are the Antichrist. He described Mr. Sanford as calm, not making any specific threats, but under the surface, extremely angry.
There are other reports that his son had an illness, congenital hyperinsulinism, that required multiple surgeries and created a financial burden. He quit his job at some point to care for the boy. He sounds like a man under long-term stress who had a long-term obsessive anger at Mormon's. Sounds like he was pretty close to some "edge" and I imagine something happened that pushed him over.
