Order of nuns slams boss for comparing Charlie Kirk to saint: 'false prophets'

Source: Raw Story

October 1, 2025 1:53PM ET

A group of New York nuns are criticizing Cardinal Timothy Dolan's praise of late MAGA influencer Charlie Kirk and likening him to “a modern-day St. Paul," saying his words "do not reflect the qualities of a saint." "We grieve every loss of life and unequivocally condemn the killing of Mr. Kirk," Sisters of Charity of New York wrote in a statement.

"What Cardinal Dolan may not have known is that many of Mr. Kirk’s words were marked by racist, homophobic, transphobic, and anti-immigrant rhetoric, by violent pro-gun advocacy, and by the promotion of Christian nationalism. These prejudicial words do not reflect the qualities of a saint. To compare Mr. Kirk to St. Paul risks confusing the true witness of the Gospel and giving undue sanction to words and actions that hurt the very people Jesus calls us to love."

Dolan, American prelate in the Catholic Church and the nuns' boss, compared Kirk to St. Paul the Apostle, an influential leader of the early Christian church, during a conversation with Fox and Friends earlier this month. "He was a missionary, he's an evangelist, he's a hero. He's one I think that knows what Jesus meant when he said 'the truth will set you free,'" Dolan said.

The nuns urged Dolan and church leadership "to lift up witnesses whose lives truly reflect the Gospel of Jesus Christ – lives of humility, justice, compassion, and peace."

Thank you for saying what many Catholic leaders haven't the guts to say. Dolan is a disgrace.

As of October 2025, Cardinal Timothy Dolan has not been defrocked and remains the Archbishop of New York. He has, however, faced public and persistent criticism, particularly concerning his handling of clergy sexual abuse cases during his tenure as Archbishop of Milwaukee. (google ai)

Sisters of Charity of New York Respond to Cardinal Dolan’s Remarks on Charlie Kirk

Several of us watched Cardinal Dolan’s recent FOX interview, where he referred to Charlie Kirk as “a modern-day St. Paul.” The Cardinal praised Mr. Kirk’s conviction and willingness to speak about the Lord and for being a model for young people looking for meaning in their lives.

We grieve every loss of life and unequivocally condemn the killing of Mr. Kirk.

What Cardinal Dolan may not have known is that many of Mr. Kirk’s words were marked by racist, homophobic, transphobic, and anti-immigrant rhetoric, by violent pro-gun advocacy, and by the promotion of Christian nationalism. These prejudicial words do not reflect the qualities of a saint. To compare Mr. Kirk to St. Paul risks confusing the true witness of the Gospel and giving undue sanction to words and actions that hurt the very people Jesus calls us to love.

Just last week, Cardinal Dolan joined us in celebrating the 50th anniversary of the canonization of our Foundress, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton. Elizabeth’s legacy is not one of exclusion or hatred, but of radical welcome, tireless service, and unwavering love of neighbor. Many of Mr. Kirk’s words stand in stark contrast to the charity and compassion that defined those of Elizabeth Seton.

For generations, the Sisters of Charity of New York have cared for immigrant families arriving with nothing but hope. While our direct service has changed, our commitment to those families endures. They deserve true examples of discipleship, not false prophets.

In this moment, we reaffirm our mission: to walk with all people who are poor and marginalized, to welcome immigrants and refugees, to defend the dignity of LGBTQ+ persons, and to labor for peace in a world saturated with violence. These are the marks of authentic discipleship. These are the qualities of saints.

We urge our Church leadership, including Cardinal Dolan, to lift up witnesses whose lives truly reflect the Gospel of Jesus Christ – lives of humility, justice, compassion, and peace.

We will continue to pray for Mr. Kirk, his family and for all who mourn his loss.

Also, while there are certain matters where the archdiocese has authority by canon law, which would apply to any religious order operating in the diocese, Dolan is not their boss, in any usual sense of the word.

Today, the Sisters of Charity of New York is a constituent community of the Federation of Sisters of Charity in the Vincentian-Setonian Tradition, an umbrella group that brings together the various congregations that trace their roots back to Saint Elizabeth Seton, and ultimately to Saint Vincent de Paul.

In April 2023, the congregation announced that they would cease accepting new members and acknowledge a "path to completion", with the current sisters eventually dying until the order is "completed".

Charlie Kirk is on record that he hated the word empathy.

Something Apostle Paul never said.

So how they are similar strains credulity.

I've no doubt that this Dolan character will not take criticism -- from women, for God's sake! -- lying down. The nuns may end up facing a choice to leave the order or spend the rest of their lives in a monastery, silenced by an irate fool wearing the cloth of a Cardinal.

I pray they leave the Order en-masse and continue their good work speaking truth and Jesus to this narrow-minded fool.

which they most likely would. I doubt that Dolan has any control over nun Orders anyway, which is normally controlled by The Vatican.

Pope Leo XIV seems to be even more "radical" than Pope Francis.

I guess Dolan is like a Brigadier General who was never promoted further because he's an asshole. A one star who should never have made the Generals' list in the first place.
