Trump's legal crackdown on "sanctuary" cities and states yields few results so far

Source: CBS News

Since President Trump returned to the White House in January, his administration has mounted an aggressive effort to crack down on cities, counties and states that aren't participating in its mass deportation campaign, threatening these so-called "sanctuary" jurisdictions with lawsuits, funding cuts and other penalties.

The Trump administration has also directed Immigration and Customs Enforcement and other federal agencies to surge deportation agents to sanctuary jurisdictions like Chicago and Los Angeles, where highly visible federal immigration raids have triggered massive protests and confrontations.

But eight months into Mr. Trump's second administration, the effort to exert pressure on these jurisdictions has yielded few tangible results, with most lawsuits still unresolved and local Democratic leaders doubling down on policies that limit or bar cooperation with federal immigration officials.

The Justice Department has cited only one case in which a jurisdiction — Louisville, Kentucky — has abandoned its sanctuary policies in the face of legal actions or threats. Nevada's Republican governor also recently vowed to cooperate with federal immigration officials after his state was identified as a sanctuary jurisdiction. The administration's attempts to halt federal funds to sanctuary jurisdictions, meanwhile, have been blocked by federal courts.

immigrants enjoy no protections in any jurisdiction from Federal detention.

Moreover, the Constitution has long held that states and local jurisdictions cannot be compelled to enforce Federal laws, including immigration laws, which is why Trump’s criminal efforts are failing.

Oddly enough, it seems that the only place in the US where true 'sanctuary' from prosecution exists, is the current residence of our Felon-in-Chief!

It's all bullshit from the get-go. If the state of Tennessee and the city of Memphis are fine with the way things are being run there, why does the federal government need to butt in? Same with Portland, the city and state are perfectly happy with local law enforcement ,and they never asked for help from the federal government.

Whatever happened to "states' rights"? It's a founding belief of the Republican Party ... and it suddenly doesn't exist, apparently.
It doesn't exist in the minds of Chump and Stephen Miller anyway.

This has to stop! And let's not call it a crackdown, it's an invasion.

Particularly the way they just report his mob-style threats to "break" "Democrat" programs to force them to cave. What needs to be included are the words "wildly illegal."

The thing is, they have ALREADY Been withholding funding and breaking things -- and will continue to do so if the Senate doesn't stay strong and file Amicus briefs in every lawsuit against these wildly illegal actions.

That is the REAL showdown.

When we have more seats in 2028, the first bill introduced should be filing suit against the Executive Branch. If any circumstances meet the hurdle of direct harm to the institution, it is now. That would be a powerful declaration of all the illegal acts usurping Congressional authority, however far it would -- or wouldn't -- get.

And more often than no DO win.

And it will be the same with his wildly unlawful threats to unleash hell on "Democrat" programs and fire federal workers in mass as a mob tactic get Senate Democrats to cave.

Motions to enjoin are already being filed by federal workers and the city of NY is fighting back on the blatantly illegal withholding of funds.

They must stand strong. If they give into the threats, they ONLY invite more horrors.

The shut is about a lot more than Enhanced ACA subsidies. It is about forcing Republicans in Congress to stand up and DEMAND that he stop breaking his oath of office. They really need to make that FAR more front and center. The illegality of his "shutdown retribution needs to be front and center!
