Toyota denies promising to invest $10bn in US after Trump announcement

Source: the guardian

The US president claimed he had been told the carmaker was going to be setting up factories ‘all over’ the US

The Japanese auto giant Toyota Motor has denied Donald Trump’s suggestion that it is poised to invest more than $10bn in the United States over the coming years.

On a visit to Japan earlier this week, the US president claimed he had been told that the carmaker was going to be setting up factories “all over” the US “to the tune of over $10bn”.

“Go out and buy a Toyota,” added Trump.

But a senior executive at Toyota – the world’s largest automaker – said that no such explicit promise of investment at that level had been made, although Toyota plans to invest and create new jobs in the US.

The firm held talks with Japanese and American officials ahead of Trump’s visit.

Toyota fact-checks Trump: $10 billion investment isn’t new

A Toyota executive pushed back on President Trump’s recent claim that the company pledged to invest $10 billion into U.S. auto plants but stressed the automaker‘s commitment to continued investment.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the Japan Mobility Show in Tokyo, Toyota executive Hiroyuki Ueda said he thinks the $10 billion Trump mentioned during his visit to the Asian country referred to a number discussed during his first administration....

“Toyota remains committed to continued investment in its U.S. operations, reflecting our principle to build where we sell and buy where we build,” the statement reads. “With nearly $50 billion already invested and 49,000 direct employees across the United States, this ongoing commitment strengthens our support for American manufacturing, supply chains, jobs, and customers. More details will follow soon.”

Trump said European nation would purchase $750 billion worth of U.S. energy, and invest another $600 billion worth of investments into the U.S..

The head of the European Union can’t spend its member’s treasury!! Only the individual state members can - and they’re not!

Get it in a news cycle for propaganda purposes. Reality doesn't matter.

Only a small fraction of the people who heard the initial announcement later will learn that it's BS. And, apparently, many 'Muricans still not skeptical enough of his spew to disbelieve it from the get-go, which is the reality-based way to respond.

It would be like investing in Germany in the late 1930's. If the world wanted to help us, they'd write off America and build economic alliances elsewhere for the next economic cycle or two.

...new plants, depending on size, tech, and land required start at $1.5 billion and could go to $4.5 billion.
So this is enough for perhaps 3 plants.
Even if it were 6, that's not "all over the United States" and they didn't make this decision overnight. These analyses have probably been ongoing for 3 years.

…while the plants are under construction.

As was done to a South Korean Hyundai battery plant in Georgia in September this year. Raided by ICE, seized 475 workers who were putting it all together. I’m sure all those Georgians who were hoping to get a job there are looking at the unfinished facility and asking themselves if this is really the MAGA they wanted.

Trump’s insanity, and that of Musk, Miller, and all the rest of his administration — it’s demolishing every shred of our credibility and our ability to recover when they’re gone. Everything, everywhere, all at once.

The Japanese wouldn't make a mistake like that. They know the difference between a yen and a dollar, and they're a very detail-priented people.

He just says whatever he feels like saying. I doubt that the concept of "truth" vs. "lie" even means anything to him at this point. Anything he wants to happen (like Toyota investing billions of dollars in the U.S.) is already real to him as soon as he thinks of it, and he'll declare it to be so without a moment's hesitation.

If there was once a time when lying was a conscious act for him, something he did feliberately, even strategically, that's no longer the case from what I can see. The line between reality and fantasy is getting weaker and weaker for him, if it even still exists. He just opens his mouth, and whatever comes out is real to him, at least in the moment. He may forget about it 5 minutes later, but it was real to him when he said it.

I'm sure I don't need to mention how ludicrous (and dangerous) it is for someone whose sense of reality is flickering like a failing fluorescent tube to ne running a country,, but here we are.
