Key economic reports for October may not be released at all because of the government shutdown, a senior White House official said Wednesday. With the spending impasse appearing to be near an end, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters that part of the fallout could be lasting damage to the governments data collection ability.
The Democrats may have permanently damaged the Federal Statistical system with October CPI and jobs reports likely never being released, Leavitt said. All of that economic data released will be permanently impaired, leaving our policymakers at the Fed, flying blind at a critical period.
Release of important economic data has been at the forefront of Wall Street concerns as the shutdown dragged on for more than six weeks, the longest in history.
Among the most important releases are the monthly nonfarm payrolls count and the consumer price index, both of which come from the Labor Departments Bureau of Labor Statistics. Other data impacted includes retail sales, import and export data as well as consumer spending and income. Most Wall Street economists have been expecting all of the data to be released, albeit delayed. However, Leavitts comments cast doubt on whether that will happen.

Well that will go over well with the economists.

Letting the system collapse may be the only option now. Waiting to see how financial markets will react. Maybe I should move all in on Euros.

(12,435 posts)It has always seemed to me that the crooks -- particularly Republican crooks -- believe their crimes aren't crimes if they get away with it. The only crime for these folks is getting caught.
And with the felon pardoning MAGA criminals right and left, getting caught isn't even considered a crime

as has been shown so many times this year where the DOJ goes after agents and prosecutors who investigated and prosecuted tRump's and allies' crimes.

When republicans control everything's somehow anything that goes wrong is the fault of democrats.

(12,435 posts)They were technically employed through 9/30, so the job losses would be counted in the Oct report.
The BLS report certainly describes a jobs bloodbath in numbers that don't get picked up in private sector reports like ADP.
Ensuring the non-release of that report is probably why the felon didn't put much pressure on the Republicans to get rid of the filibuster. When the danger passed, he sure as hell would have and the the House CR would almost certainly have been passed by the Senate Republicans this week to ensure the government was open as people went home for Thanksgiving.
It seems to me there is widespread false premise that the only "win" would be getting an extension of the ACA subsidies. But there were two ways to win:
1) Trumpublicans ended the shutdown by adding an ACA subsidy extension
2) Trumpublicans ended the shutdown by jettisoning the filibuster.
Option 2 was a far, far, far, far better outcome than the "deal."
The 5 additional defectors only needed to hold out another week or so. In addition to the malignant narcissist-in-chief ramping up the pressure, rank and file Trumpublicans dread of their constituents hating on them over Thanksgiving dinner, would have pushed Thune to cave on the filibuster. The result:
-Instead of saying, "Why oh why did the Dems subject us to this pain for nothing," more would be livid with: "You mean you could have ended this by getting rid of the filibuster before it even started!!!"
-Democrats would be the ones that stood strong, doing battle on behalf of the American people with the leverage they had right up to the point that that leverage was forcibly taken from them.
-Our Democratic electeds would have demonstrated an unprecedented strength.
-People who support the Democratic Party would be riding as high as they were on Friday. Enraged by the ACA loss, but proud as hell of the strength demonstrated.
-The depravity and cruelty shown by the felon during the shutdown would be all the more evident as his Trumpublicans took 100% responsibly for the horror show.
If you are angry, as I am, when we contact Democratic leaders I think we need to be crystal clear that they failed us, not be failing to get their demands met, they failed us because in this fight we had faith that they would (1) make their demand, (2) hold out until either (a) MAGA R's met the demand, or (b) MAGA R's went nuclear and ended the shutdown on their own, without the complicity or capitulation of the Democrats.

Scroll, scroll, and scroll down to the one, "The government shutdown could end soon. The release of key government data could take longer."

As for timing, Citigroup economists on Wednesday speculated that the September nonfarm payrolls report could be released as early as Friday but more likely in the early part of next week. They said it could take until early December to put together the October count.
Jobs report data should be easy to collect belatedly because it involves asking business for hard numbers, according to Jeffrey Roach, chief economist at LPL Financial. In fact, he said the BLS could likely get multiple months worth of data during one collection period if needed. ((speaking of the headline non-farm payroll jobs numbers which comes from the Establishment Survey of businesses -progree))
But he said its harder to get information from everyday people because it requires asking them about their willingness to work during a period that has already passed. ((speaking of the separate Household Survey, which is the basis of the headline unemployment rate and labor force and labor force participation rate among many other metrics --progree))
Its just the more nuanced qualitative surveys that cannot be replicated, Roach said. The water has gone under that bridge already.
If the Establishment Survey numbers are bad, as pat_k suggests, due to fork-in-the-road federal employees being let go, they may very well come up with excuses for not putting out any of the October jobs report. But that's just kicking the can down the road -- any upcoming November and December etc. job reports will show fewer federal workers, so that can't be buried forever without gamesmanship.
