Ukraine agrees to peace proposal, with only "minor details" to settle, official says, but no word from Russia

Source: CBS News

A U.S. official told CBS News on Tuesday that Ukraine's government had "agreed to a peace deal" brokered by the Trump administration to stop Russia's nearly four-year assault. The American official and Ukraine's national security adviser Rustem Umerov said a common understanding on a proposal had been reached, with details still to be worked out.

Umerov voiced optimism that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy could travel to the U.S. before the end of November to finalize an agreement. CBS News was first to report on Sunday that U.S. and Ukrainian officials had previously discussed a potential visit to the U.S. this week by Zelenskyy.

There is a better than 50% chance that this never happens, but it is a smart move by Zelenskyy. Russia's military is exhausted, and Trump desperately needs a "win" somewhere, anywhere, so Zelenskyy has leverage. The Russian occupied parts of Ukraine are a wasteland, and anyone who is able will leave. Most importantly, Zelenskyy gets the equivalent of NATO membership while pretending not to be in NATO. The killing will stop, and with peace, Ukraine will get stronger, and Russia will continue to get weaker. Ukraine can go back for the lost territories when Putin dies.

If Russia embarrasses Trump and walks away, then Zelenskyy and the Europeans tried, and Trump will keep up the pressure on Putin.

The US isn’t giving shit to Ukraine, if it did that would be pressure.

Putin desperately needs peace. He needs the oil embargo lifted and he needs Europe to buy more Russian natural gas.

To be clear, Trump is not a hero in this, but his desperation is useful to Ukraine right now.

Many a slip between cup and lip, as they say, and also don't count your chickens before they're hatched.

Still, I guess it throws the ball into Russia's court if it's presented as a fait accompli.

Ed Murrow, Cronkite, Connie Chung, Mike Wallace, and so on must be rolling in their graves if they dead.

This crap is straight out of Pravada. These are not minor details to be worked out later but it is asking
Ukraine to surrender to Putin/Russia and reward them for their savage war on the people and lands
of Ukraine. How many Ukrainian children has Russia kidnapped?

IT IS NOT A PEACE PLAN.

The one Russia wrote, or the one the Europeans revised? Russia rejected the edits.

How is this even news when there are zero details on what they agreed to. I think they're trying to push the implication that Ukraine agreed to the one authored by Russia, so they can accuse Zelenskyy of reneging on the deal later.

I believe there are at least three versions of the revised "deals" going around, no idea which is the one the Russians will probably finally reject. The noises they've made so far are predictably not promising despite the US administration's hype.

Even if there's ever an agreement in principle, NATO, the EU and Ukraine's parliament will have to give their formal approval anyway (I guess Trump will have to involve Congress as well if he's not having a 100% autocratic despot day) before anything's signed and as binding as these things will ever be.

So the war will continue, and hopefully the anti-Russia republicans can join with the Dems to pass more aid for Ukraine.

Putin may decline the changes, and then the war continues, but Ukraine's counter offer, which the American negotiators apparently endorse, is a reasonable compromise to stop the killing and is not a surrender.

It seems there has been a response from Moscow:
Jerusalem Post
https://www.jpost.com/international/internationalrussia-ukraine-war/article-876329

"Russia will make no big concessions on a peace plan for Ukraine, a senior Russian diplomat said on Wednesday, after a leaked recording of a call involving US envoy Steve Witkoff showed he had advised Moscow on how to pitch to Donald Trump.

Witkoff is expected to travel to Moscow next week with other senior US officials for talks with Russian leaders about a possible plan to end the nearly four-year-old war in Ukraine, the deadliest in Europe since World War Two."
