US attack on Venezuela raises fears of future Greenland takeover

The US bombardment of Venezuela and the capture of its president, Nicolás Maduro, have renewed fears of an American takeover of Greenland, as members of Donald Trump’s Maga movement gleefully set their sights on the Danish territory after the attack in South America.

Just hours after the US military operation in Venezuela, the rightwing podcaster Katie Miller – the wife of Stephen Miller, Donald Trump’s powerful deputy chief of staff for policy – posted on X a map of Greenland draped in the stars and stripes with the caption: “SOON.” The threat to annex the mineral-rich territory, which is part of the Nato alliance, drew immediate outrage from Danes. Copenhagen’s ambassador to the US, Jesper Møller Sørensen, reposted Miller’s provocation with a “friendly reminder” of the longstanding defence ties between the two countries.

“We are close allies and should continue to work together as such. US security is also Greenland’s and Denmark’s security,” he said. “The Kingdom of Denmark and the United States work together to ensure security in the Arctic.” He said Denmark had increased defence spending in 2025, committing $13.7bn (£10.2bn) “that can be used in the Arctic and North Atlantic. Because we take our joint security seriously.” He added: “And yes, we expect full respect for the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark.”

Trump recently named Jeff Landry, the governor of Louisiana, as a special envoy to Greenland. Landry, a former state attorney general, thanked Trump for his appointment in December, saying it was “an honour to serve you in this volunteer position to make Greenland a part of the US”.

This is an Article 5 moment. NATO and EU need to start NOW with economic/travel sanctions against the US for war crimes in Venezuela and threats against Canada, Mexico, and Greenland.

Trump gets control of Greenland's rare earth minerals and Putin gets the collapse of NATO.

Seems likely to happen

Why a 'takeover' when the governent of Greenland seems willing to allow us to have a base there for our common defense? Are there conflicts we don't read about?

Greenland -- especially as it defrosts due to climate change -- has valuable resources that the U.S. wants for itself. Trump doesn't want trade with Greenland to get those resources, he simply wants to take them.

No mealy mouthed appeals to the US, just lots of fortification and boots on the ground. I'm an American and I do not trust Trump any further than I could throw the capital.

Why?

Because of NUCLEAR WEAPONS and the capabilities to use them. No matter the strength of our Military, the false bravado of its leaders, there will be NO winners in this dangerous game of chicken.

Russia, India, Pakistan, China, N.Korea, Israel, and soon Iran, have NUCLEAR capabilities besides the United States. Once a Nuclear weapon has been fired, all bets are off.

If TACO Don is that fucking stupid, we are all dead ducks.

“🇬🇱 We have been a close and loyal friend of the United States for generations. We have stood shoulder to shoulder in difficult times. We have taken responsibility for security in the North Atlantic — and not least for North America. That is what true friends do.

Precisely for that reason, the current and repeated rhetoric coming from the United States is entirely unacceptable.

When the President of the United States speaks of “needing Greenland” and links us to Venezuela and military intervention, it is not only wrong. It is disrespectful.

Our country is not an object in great-power rhetoric. We are a people. A country. A democracy. That must be respected — especially by close and loyal friends.

We are part of NATO, and we are fully aware of our country’s strategic location. We also understand that our security depends on good friends and strong alliances. In that context, a respectful and loyal relationship with the United States is very important. That has been the case for decades.

But alliances are built on trust. And trust requires respect.

Threats, pressure, and talk of annexation have no place between friends. That is not how one speaks to a people who have repeatedly demonstrated responsibility, stability, and loyalty.

Enough is enough.

No more pressure.
No more insinuations.
No more fantasies of annexation.

We are open to dialogue. We are open to conversations. But they must take place through the proper channels and in full respect of international law. And the proper channels are not random and disrespectful posts on social media.

Greenland is our home and our territory.
And it will remain so. 🇬🇱”
