Meta Adding Facial Recognition to Its Smart Glasses That Identifies People in Real Time, Hoping the Public Is Too Distracted by Political Turmoil to Care

According to new reporting by the New York Times, Meta could make the facial recognition features available to smart glasses owners as early as this year. Internally, the software goes by the designation Name Tag. Per the NYTs sources, it would let anyone who owns Metas smart glasses to identify people in the real world, instantly pulling up their information through Metas AI assistant.

The same documents likewise argued that domestic political turmoil across the US in May of 2025 this was in the early days of Trumps deportation campaign, Elon Musks DOGE agenda, and more would made an appealing time window for the release of such a controversial feature because the public would be too burned out to notice or care.
We will launch during a dynamic political environment where many civil society groups that we would expect to attack us would have their resources focused on other concerns, the memo read, per the NYT.

If they do, the privacy nightmare Metas smart glasses already represent will only get worse. As American Civil Liberties Union deputy director Nathan Freed Wessler told the NYT: Face recognition technology on the streets of America poses a uniquely dire threat to the practical anonymity we all rely on. This technology is ripe for abuse.

Everytime I think I can't hate Meta and Zuckerberg more...
And if anyone thinks Trump and any RW Republican who succeeds him won't be able to get all the surveillance footage from these smart glasses, you haven't been paying attention to Zuckerberg.

(10,750 posts)They went all out over this. They got most major businesses to go all in before most had even heard of it. They managed to convince some sites and businesses to switch to this new thing because Suckabird knew that this would force others to download it as well just to be able to keep on doing business with them.
It is why I am such a rabid denouncer of businesses solely using the internet for things, especially hiring practices. A business wants more employees? How about maybe stop denying a percentage of applicants because they don't have ready access to a computer. Phones these days kind of make up for that, but if anyone here has ever tried to fill out an application or other such 'paperwork' on a phone, they might be more understanding of why people go 'postal'.
Again, it is all by design. They want to be in control of every aspect of everything so that they can tweak things to their favor. And, they have succeeded. It is how this country has operated since the 1970s. The rich get it all while we wear rags and die working for them. And I don't know which is worse. That fact, or the fact that the very few who have been staunchly defending these leeches are doing so just because the wealthy allowed one or two crumbs to fall through. And like the good little piranha that we are, we go into a feeding frenzy over them, and then thank the bastards for it.
