Brendan Carr, the Trump-appointed chair of the FCC, wants TV broadcasters to rally around the American flag in celebration of the U.S.s 250th anniversary this year suggesting that, for example, local stations could start each broadcast day with The Star-Spangled Banner or Pledge of Allegiance.
On Friday, Carr announced the Pledge America Campaign, which he framed as part of the White Houses Salute to America 250 Task Force agenda, which invites citizens to have a renewed love of American history, experience the beauty of our country, and ignite a spirit of adventure and innovation that will raise our nation to new heights over the next 250 years.

(7,822 posts)Then the screen would show the 'Indian-head test pattern' until they began broadcasting again in the morning. Can't recall how many times I fell asleep during a movie and woke up to see he test pattern flickering away. Those were the days, eh?

I like the local cbs news crew, but never watch their evening news or national news. Havent watched the national cbs news since Dan Rather and at that time, didnt watch him much.

I remember broadcast networks used to do this, back when we had the cute loopy UHF antennae and people pretended to fix the reception by smacking the TV on its wooden outer chassis. You used to have to get off your ass to change the channel or adjust the audio volume playing through a single 3" speaker. At midnight they'd play the anthem and go to test patterns before ending the broadcast and then you got static until around 5am when they anthemed again and went to a news show. Are we bringing back the "good old days" thanks to Mr. Carr?

(129,944 posts)Broadcast TV goes 24 hours now, although the late night material tends to be local or paid programming without a large audience. But there's no magic instant in the morning when the test pattern goes away and it's time for a program.

"That concludes our broadcast day. [Station Name] is a service of [Company Name]. We will return with [Morning Show Name] tomorrow morning at [Time]. From all of us here at the station, have a wonderful night. This is [Station Name] signing off."
followed by the Star-Spangled Banner especially when the station would power off overnight.
Now that most, if not all, stations run 24 hours a day, this convention has fallen to the wayside.
I am not surprised that the Trump administration is pushing this as this was the norm back in the 1950s.

Trump has ruined this country and torn apart so many things we have held sacred for hundreds of years. I am not a person to hate and I hate him with all my being.

(10,520 posts)everything that was ever good about this country and then they expect us to feel patriotic? I remember the bicentennial. No one told us what to feel, or the TV channels what to broadcast.
We were not long out of Vietnam and Watergate, and Civil Rights legislation was only about a decade behind us, so we had a lot of negative feelings, but I doubt they were even half as negative as we feel this year.
