Danish military evacuates U.S. submariner who needed urgent medical care off Greenland

Source: NPR

February 22, 2026 6:08 AM ET

COPENHAGEN, Denmark — Denmark's military says its arctic command forces evacuated a crew member of a U.S. submarine off the coast of Greenland for urgent medical treatment.

The Danish Joint Arctic Command, on its Facebook page, said the crew member was evacuated on Saturday some 7 nautical miles (8 miles; 13 kilometers) off Nuuk — the capital of the vast, ice-covered territory — and transferred to a hospital in the city. The crew member was retrieved by a Danish Seahawk helicopter that had been deployed on an inspection ship.

Also late Saturday, U.S. President Donald Trump announced plans to deploy a hospital ship to the Danish autonomous territory of Greenland, alleging that many people there are sick and not receiving care — prompting a defense of Denmark's healthcare system from Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen.

"Working with the fantastic Governor of Louisiana, Jeff Landry, we are going to send a great hospital boat to Greenland to take care of the many people who are sick, and not being taken care of there. It's on the way!!!" Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform, referring to his special envoy for Greenland.

This may be part of the reason behind more Waste. Fraud. Abuse. of our hospital ships.

1. I am kind of worried about that submarine

Bet the Danes are too. I know it's not unusual, but nothing seems innocent right now.

14. Submariner here. I'm not worried.

Neither are the Danes, I’m sure.

There are many reasons the sub could have been there. Surveillance of the Danes (we watch our allies even in sane administrations); surveillance of units surveilling the Danes; practice hiding; in transit to someplace else; etc. They might have been someplace else entirely and this was the closest place to do a transfer.

2. I'd like to know more about "many people who are sick".

We only have 150 troops in Greenland (https://theworlddata.com/greenland-military-statistics/#google_vignette.)
I was in the Navy. If I was on a ship that had a crew of only 150 sailors, and 'many people' were sick, there's a serious problem.
A reporter needs to ask Hegseth how many troops are sick, and how serious are the illnesses. Congress should be able to find out, but if the question came up, Johnson would call the House out of session.

And I would certainly trust Denmark's healthcare system over our own.

4. I think Trump means that the US is coming to the rescue of all those sick Greenlanders.

You know, the ones who have access to free health care on the island or in Denmark. That's why the Danish PM has rejected Trump's kind offer.

16. "I think [REDACTED] means" is the operative statement isn't it? Do we really know what he meant?

It isn't safe to assume that he even knew what he meant or was talking about in any way....

Yes, a normal person saying, "and not being taken care of there" would mean the people of Greenland, but in this case I'm doubting it....

I don't think his proclamation coming the same day as the airlifting of a U.S. submariner to a hospital in Greenland by the Danish military is a coincidence--even though Greenland seemed to take it that way.

His mind operates like a Rube Goldberg machine that turns complex information into a simple comical representation of what it once was based on what he wanted it to actually be. We can almost safely assume he heard the truth that an American sailor was sick and had to be airlifted by the Danish military and that turned into people in Greenland mobbing a U.S. submarine to get to the sick bay for care because they don't have any healthcare in their own country somehow.

And then of course, promising something he can't or doesn't intend to deliver is just par for the course that he continually cheats on....

So what could go wrong on a US sub that would sicken a large number of people?

15. I think two unrelated incidents are being conflated.

1) Trump is claiming to be sending some sort of ship he is calling a “hospital ship” (though both true hospital ships are in port undergoing maintenance) to help that country’s native citizens (not US military stationed there) who are ill.

2) One sailor was transferred off a submarine for a medical emergency. The “hospital ship” is not going there for that lone submariner. The rest of the submarine’s crew are nominally healthy.

in a normal sane world that a “hospital ship” would not be dispatched for a single sick sailor, but we do not live in a sane world so such assumptions are perilous. Also, there is the whole “Trump claims he is sending a hospital ship for sick Greenlanders while the only two ships we have are in port out of service” thing. This could mean he is dragging a World War II battleship out of a museum and painting a red cross on it.

He is like a child who has just been granted unlimited powers who can change domestic and world events on a mere whim, with no thought as to the amount of work, expertise, and money that goes into his impulsive declarations.

8. Someone in need of urgent medical care

Would be medivaced by aircraft to the nearest medical facility capable of treatment, which would happen much quicker than waiting on a boat from Louisiana. Also, I am sure Greenland has trauma centers that can handle any typical injury, so either they want this sailor out of the territory to avoid any false pretext “rescue”, or the sailor had an injury not treatable in the average trauma center, say radiation burns.

10. Did Trump misread that Denmark "evacuated" the submariner to the U.S., hence the inane idea to send a medical ship?

Is this another "asylum/mental hospital" blunder?

I'm thinking anything he does not comprehend is turned into some sort of action based on his bizarre takes.
Someone needs to draw him some pictures ASAP!

This may be a very eye opening experience for our submariner... seeing how professionally things are handled in a progressive, modern country.

I do hope it's not a serious or life threatening injury/illness.
